Chapter five

Mary

June flew by in a flash and before I knew it Earl was going on a club ride tomorrow and afterwards he was taking me to a cookout at his clubhouse. Nervous was an understatement for how I was feeling about going there once again. Not because I had anything against the club, but because of the men that were there. I made Earl promise to not leave me alone while we were there.

I bask in the cold air as I walk through the door at Melbres to start my shift. I see Melissa already behind the counter and give her a wave before heading to the back to clock in. She is talking to an older gentleman at the counter when I come back up so I decide to let them finish and begin working on refilling the salt and pepper containers.

When she finishes her conversation, I come up beside her. “How’s the morning been? Are you expecting a big lunch rush?”

“It should be our typical rush. By the way, Earl stopped by and talked to me about tomorrow. I took you off the schedule so you could go,” Melissa tells me, and I’m shocked. Why is he coming by to talk to her about my schedule?

“Melissa, I’m fine with working. He shouldn’t have done that. I’m off in plenty of time to go to the cookout.”

“I don’t know, Mary, he just came by and asked if you could be off the whole day. We will be fine without you. I don’t see it being that busy tomorrow anyway,” she tells me.

I’m fucking pissed! How dare he interfere with my work? I know he is out on a job for the club today, so it will be late tonight, at the earliest, before I see him. I look up when I hear the bell jingle on the door to see Kate coming in with her new son, Ryker. As soon as Sam got back with him, they went to the courthouse and got married, then started the process for her to adopt him.

“Hey, girl, take a seat anywhere and I’ll be right with you,” I call out to her.

Before making my way over, I grab a pack of crayons and coloring books Melissa keeps under the counter for the kids, then place it on the table in front of Ryker when I get there.

“Thanks, Mary. I’ll take water to drink and if you could get him an apple juice, that would be great. Sam and Earl are supposed to be meeting me here.”

“Oh, are they now? Well, that’s good. I need to have a few choice words with Earl. It saves me from having to wait until later to do it,” I tell her, knowing that she can hear the anger in my voice.

“Oh no, what has he done?” she asks. “Don’t tell me he fucked up and messed with one of them skanks at the clubhouse?”

“No, no, he’s going to wish that’s what he did when I’m through with him, though.
