âThis way, now!â the deep voice commanded. They didnât give me a choice, tugging at my arm.
I looked up to see an older man, maybe in his fifties, with long grey hair and a full salt and pepper beard. He was equal to my height and had a similar build, but I could feel his strength far outmatched mine from his force.
He pulled me through a maze of corridors and guided me through the twists and turns. Familiar with the layout, there was no hesitation in which direction to go next. He realized I was now following him and let go of his grip. I followed close behind, keeping up with his lightning fast pace. I obeyed him, if only because I was already being chased and needed a way out.
We darted from tunnel to tunnel until it became clear we were not in an area that was used often. Most of the lights were out and old debris littered the murky ground. After a few minutes of splashing through the tunnels, we reached a steel gate blocking our path. Behind the bars lay more dark corridors with a hint of sunlight creeping in the distance. The man looked back for a moment and then reached into his black suede jacket. Either it was the adrenaline or my newfound trust; I stood unfazed as he pulled out a large handgun. He raised his hand and slammed the chrome against the rusty padlock. It exploded upon impact, sending reddish-brown pieces onto the cement. He leaned into the gate but it only moved an inch.
âCome on! This weighs a ton!â he said, fighting the steel with his bare hands.
I joined him and grabbed two of the bars, pressing my entire body weight into it. It turned forward as we pushed. Rust popped off the hinges, creating a new pile of brown residue under our feet. My biceps started burning but I kept pushing through the pain. My arms shook causing my grip to loosen. The sweat accumulating under my palms caused my grip to slip. I was losing energy fast, so I decided on one final push. I leaned in and pressed in as hard as I could. Not the best idea. My fingers slipped off the bars and the momentum sent me head first towards the gate. My shoulders crashed into the frame and my head poked through the bars. I regained my balance and realized in this position I could push with better leverage.
As I walked it forward, the gate creaked open until it hit the uneven cobblestone ground. It wouldnât budge anymore but there was enough space for one person to fit through at a time. Loud splashing through the shallow water echoed through the tunnel behind us.
âGo!â he said, still gripping the bars.
I wormed my way through the opening and waited on the other side.
âKeep moving!â His voice boomed through the rusty bars. âWeâll meet soon. Go, donât stop moving, just run.â
Without question, I turned and headed into the dim corridor toward the light.
