Chapter Thirteen

Aaron walked into school on Monday morning with his head spinning. He’d hardly slept the night before, and it showed. Dark circles formed under his eyes, and he yawned every few minutes. His English teacher asked if he was all right, and he responded that he had not gotten enough sleep.

It wasn’t completely a lie.

He hadn’t been able to sleep because thoughts were busy shifting through his mind, fighting for space. They drifted back and forth between his father, Chance, and Finn. Inundated with these thoughts, he woke with a massive headache around two in the morning. He’d even gotten up to take aspirin for the pain.

First there was his father. Out of the blue, he told Aaron he’s dating some woman he met from work. While he was happy for his dad, he felt conflicted, too. How could he not be? What did this mean for his relationship with his father? Sure, Dad had said nothing would change, but things wouldn’t be exactly the same—inherently. His father would be spending more time with her. Could that be the reason he hadn’t called back on Saturday night? Probably. And what if the woman didn’t like him? Would Dad distance himself more to appease his girlfriend? Aaron didn’t want that to happen. Then there was the issue of him liking her. If he didn’t like her, would he have to endure her company? Or would his father end it and move on? Would he want his father to do that for him? It hardly seemed fair.

Then there was Chance. The dog was the least of his worries, honestly, but he’d invested his time in Chance and wanted to help him as much as he could. He only wished he had more time to give and planned on it for the summer.

And Finn. He had not expected seeing Finn the way he had on Sunday, with his family. It had thrown him. Finn was such a calm, collected person at the shelter…maybe a bit cocky sometimes, but in a charming rather than annoying way. When they went out for dinner, he had been fun and compassionate. Yet in his own home, where someone should feel the safest, he was trapped. He had to endure his parents fighting and turning on him.

Aaron wanted to help him, too, but didn’t know how. What help could he even give? He didn’t exactly have the resources to get Finn his own place or fix his car. Would Finn even accept his help if he offered it?

And what the hell had he been doing making a move on him like that? He was lucky Finn didn’t punch him in the face for getting so close!

Caleb and Tyler passed by his locker as he switched books and ignored him. He glanced at them, a small pang of longing for lost friendships filling him for a moment, but it passed. He did have a few other people he talked to in school, so it wasn’t entirely lonely. Besides, he told himself, the purpose of school was to learn, not to socialize.
