Chapter Ten
Aislin’s parents lived in a nice middle-class neighborhood on a rising hill above San Rafael. The outside was 1970s classic stone, but with the update of black paint and super white trim, it looked modern again.
Zane parked and set her emergency brake. She was sweating. How pathetic was that?
How on earth did she get roped into this? Sex, that’s how. Really incredible sex, Well, the hope she’d get the opportunity for some, anyway.
The curtains parted in the front window and a tiny face peeked out, and, from the wide open mouth, appeared to scream.
Kids, too. Awesome. Zane had been around her cousin’s baby when she’d been little but only held her a handful of times, and it had been years since then.
The front door opened and Aislin stood in the entry.
Yes, Zane thought. This is why I’m here. Her insides did a slow roll from nerves, but she got out of the car and opened the trunk to grab the two huge flower arrangements. The roses she’d gotten for Aislin, the Star Lily plant for her mother, and the good manners she’d learned from her own.
When she looked back up again, Aislin’s mother stood next to her and both were smiling. Zane had a flash of what Aislin would look like in the future.
It was immensely pleasing. She walked to them and was surprised when her mom gave her a huge hug and thanked her. No fake air kisses here.
“Zane, this is my mother. Mom, Zane.”
“Nice to meet you, Mrs. O’Shea.
“Fiona, please. I’ll go put these in water. They’re gorgeous, thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Zane said as she disappeared into the house.
“Here’s my gratitude.” She handed the flowers back. She reached up and with both hands pulled Zane down to kiss her, long and slow. When she pulled back, Zane remained motionless, mostly because she was thunderstruck. She’d never had the occasion to think she was, thunderstruck that is, but it was a good description.
“Ah…” Aislin laughed, took her flowers back, and grabbed Zane’s hand to pull her into the house. When they went past what must be the garage door. Loud music was playing.
“Who’s that?” Zane held a finger in the air.
Aislin stopped. “The music? Metallica. My dad loves them. Why?”
Zane noted the defensiveness that had been missing the day before. When her eyes narrowed this time Zane caught the warning and waylaid it. “Cool.” She may have said it a little quickly, but it took that look off Aislin’s face and the moment passed.
“Dinner will be ready in just a few moments. Go have a seat.”
“Aren’t you going to officially introduce me?”
“Oh,” Aislin laughed. “They all know who you are.” She disappeared into the kitchen.
Zane ascertained the men must be in the garage because the living room was empty. She sat on the couch and folded her hands in her lap.
Thank God it was only a few minutes before Aislin’s mother yelled out that dinner was ready. Her eyes widened at the stampede coming through the door. Men, little men, and a small pack of various sized dogs.
