Chapter Twelve

Heidi

“No!” I snap. Cooper glances at me with a frown; he can obviously tell from my demeanour that something is wrong. I give a forced laugh, speaking into the phone. “Moll, give me a sec.” I put the call on mute and turn to Cooper. “I should go, so I’ll catch up with you tomorrow?”

Cooper raises his eyebrows at me. Damn, why does that look so good on him? Heidi, do not think about that right now, you need to get yourself out of this mess.

He answers, hesitantly. “Yeah, OK sure, speak to you tomorrow?”

I nod, giving him a smile and a little wave.

I hurry home. I have to make up something fast.

“I'm back. Harper and I came for lunch at High Spot but we’re leaving now, Harper had to meet Ed.” I cringe, more lies. “I'm on my way home.”

“OK, no problem, I’ll make my way there and we’ll pick you up on the way.”

I sigh, relieved that I seem to have gotten away with it. Why do I feel like lying has just sent me down the rabbit hole and it's going to get worse and worse?

After shopping with Mum and Molly, we eat dinner. Later, I sink into a hot bath to try and relax me. It doesn’t work. What can I do so sort this out? It was such a close call today; I could have gotten caught. I need to talk to someone. Harper will know what to do.

I stare at her name on my phone. Sod it, I’ll call her.

She picks up, much to my relief.

“Hey, what ya doin?” she asks.

“Just having a bath, you got time to talk?”

“Yeah, just got back from the cinema, Ed and I are hanging out.”

Crap, I can't talk to her in front of Ed.

“Oh right, you think maybe when you’re on your own you can call me back?”

“It's OK, he’s upstairs having a shower, I'm making us some supper. You can talk.”

I relay to her what happened at the cafe and what my dad said about Cooper. She listens, making ‘hmmm’ noises and ‘oh my gods’ now and again, and when I finish, she sighs. “God, Heidi, this is a bit of a mess.”

“I know, I know I should finish whatever the hell this is, or might be, with Cooper, but I like him - I've liked him for years, Harper.”

“I know, and why should you have to? He’s innocent, he did nothing wrong. Your dad is being so out of order.”

“Yeah, and Mum is siding with him. What should I do?”

She’s silent for a moment. “You know what we need to do? What would solve all this?”

Please have a plan, Harper. “What?”

“We need to find the guy that did this to you... or girl, it could have been anyone. If we did some detective work and found out, we could, I don't know, record them or something and then, bob’s your uncle, problem solved. As long as they don't find out you've been going behind their back in the meantime.
