Chapter Nine

Unknown Planet, Unknown Location

Raoul punched Yevi, catching him on the jaw, and then nailed him in the gut before he could recover. He backed up a step, tensed to strike again. "You're nothing but a lying slut."

"You're a gullible fool, especially for someone who's equal parts Bangkok whore and rock spider," Yevi retorted, wiping blood from his mouth. "Blame yourself for your own stupidity; it's not my fault."

"Fucking weed!" Raoul snarled, and lunged at him—then reeled back when Yevi caught him square in the face, damn near breaking his nose. "You know what? Dragons take you for the fool you are and leave you bare, weed. I hope you choke on the dicks you suck. I'm out. I don't need you or the rest of this stars-forsaken camp." He turned sharply and stormed off, vanishing into the forest at the south end of camp.

When he was just out of sight, he leaned against a large tree and wiped away the blood dripping from his nose as best he could. After a good fifteen minutes had passed, and it was clear that no one had followed after him, Raoul resumed walking. He hoped Yevi would be all right left to his own devices—but that was stupid. He rolled his eyes at himself. Yevi had been stranded alone for the past year; he was better equipped than Raoul to deal with fuck everything.

Raoul slipped through the trees as quickly as he was able, fervently hoping he was remembering the way correctly. It had been a long time since he'd had to trek across anything more arduous than a government building.

He'd needed three bouts in the shed to do it, between days of working hard enough to make himself useful and not worth killing, but he had finally found a very likely hiding place for the ship they sought. All he had to do was get down to it.

The sky was just beginning to darken by the time he reached the cliffs, and the ocean was so dark it looked black, crashing against the base of the blue-gray cliffs. A familiar thrill shot through Raoul; there was nothing like climbing. His mother had laughed at him growing up and told him that he was very much his father's son. Raoul had spent countless hours scaling buildings as a boy, and more than a few of his Black Ops assignments had made full use of his unique skill set.

But the tallest building was nothing like scaling a cliff face, with only his skills and his magics to keep him from a fatal fall. Raoul stripped out of his jacket and tucked it out of sight in a copse of bushes. Moving back to the edge of the cliff, he knelt and braced himself, then swung over the edge. Once his footing was secure, he moved his hands, magics activating to stick him to the rock face whenever he touched it.

When he was sure of his balance, he began the slow climb down, moving
