THIRTY-SIX

Lou interrupted Otto just as he was finishing hiding the last traces of the Stuxnet-type malware that he’d placed inside the electrical power systems that supplied the Russian intelligence agencies’ mainframes. The worm he’d created targeted the programmable logic controllers modulating the filtered air-conditioning that cooled the large computers. The end results would wreak havoc mainly with the long-term memory circuits.

“A situation is developing at McLean.”

“Tell me,” Otto said, watching the display on his laptop.

“Someone has opened fire on Mac.”

“Does he need help?”

“I can offer no definitive range of probabilities,” the computer said. The admission was rare. “Shall I contact him?”

“Will it make a difference, or will we be a distraction?”

“A distraction.”

Otto stared at the monitor showing the progress of the virus. Mac would either work his way out of the situation or he wouldn’t, and there was nothing to be done about it from here. They’d all been there in the past, and shit like this would happen again and again for the foreseeable future. It was the nature of the business.

He looked away from the screen for a moment. He’d changed since Lou’s death. The past was indistinct. He had no idea who he had been before Mac showed up in France asking for help. Intellectually, he knew that he’d been rescued from a meaningless existence as just another hacker playing around for his own pleasure. But the details of that life were no longer clear in his mind.

His time at the CIA, where he’d been given a suite of offices and had carved out his own niche, had lasted for what had seemed like forever. But it had ended with Lou’s assassination, and he could no longer clearly see the details of those years, either.

He was a new man now, a creature of the intense passions ignited by his wife’s murder. Besides Mac, Lou had been the most important person in his life, someone he not only loved but also completely depended on for his existence.

She had been an innocent. Mac wasn’t.

An antivirus program in the SVR mainframe had detected the intrusion to its power supply and was fighting back.

Otto had expected it, and he asked the computer to search for an assassination attempt on President Putin that was currently in progress.
