Chapter 20
The storm raged for the rest of the day and into the night as the storm stalled over the island. Near dawn the next morning, day eleven, I thought we’d made it out the other side. The sky was streaked with orange and gold clouds, the winds calmed down, and even some birds began to take flight again. Jessa woke when I shifted positions.
“Is it over?” she said sleepily.
“I think so. The eye must have passed over last night while we were sleeping.”
Somehow, we had slept. Every time my grip slipped on our blanket, I woke, but I was able to rest some. I stretched my back. “I’m going for a walk.”
She nodded.
I stiffly plodded into the woods to take a leak. That was when I realized that the beautiful sunrise we were having was about to be torn away from us. Far from being over, we were in the eye of the storm, and this side of Tillie would be her worst.
Gathering as much wood as I could, I hurried back to camp. “This is the eye,” I told Jessa. The camerawoman’s eyes widened. “The second part of the storm is the roughest. We’re in for quite a day, so I’m going to run and get more wood while I can, and then we hunker back down, okay?”
“I’m coming with you,” she said, standing up and folding the blanket quickly into a small square. “Put this in your pocket so we don’t lose it.”
“I can get this, Jess.”
“I said, I’m helpin’,” she enunciated.
I smiled as I walked back into the jungle. Most of the wood was wet, but we had to have something.
“Which direction is the lake?” Jessa yelled.
“That way,” I said, pointing in the direction of the water.
A few seconds later, I heard an oomph and knew she’d busted her ass in the same slick puddle I had earlier.
“You okay?” I hollered.
“I’m fine,” she huffed back. I had carried two more arms full of wood back to camp when Jessa came back smiling like the Cheshire cat.
“What is it?” I asked.
“There’s a bigger cave.”
“What? Where?”
“Behind the falls.”
I glared at the camerawoman, who shrugged. She looked just as aggravated as I was at this new bit of information, so I knew she hadn’t been aware of it. She gave us all the information she was given, and as always with Mayday, it was never enough.
“We have to bring the fire with us,” Jessa said, pinching her lip. She glanced up and down at me. “Give me your shorts.”
My eyebrows popped up. “My shorts? Get Benton’s. Oh…shit.” We left them at the campsite. We left his belt, too. My cape was gone.
“I’m going to make a torch. You carry the wood and we’ll have fire.”
I blinked twice. “You want me to get naked?”
“You wear boxer briefs. It’s more than I have on the bottom half, Finn. Are you afraid America will see shrinkage?” she said with a giggle.
“You want to come check it out, babe?” I said, grinning as I slowly slid the zipper on my cargoes down, dragging her gaze with it.
