Chapter Fourteen

Shawn rang the doorbell a few times before Angela finally came to the door. Her eyes were red.

“Hey, are you ok?” he asked as he walked through the door.

“Yeah, I’m good.” She sniffled, shook her shoulders, and hugged him before she took his coat and hung it up.

“I know you’ve been working so hard. You’re probably not eating.” He smiled and held out some Chinese food for them to have for dinner. “I had a hunch.”

“Thanks, Shawn. Your hunch was right.”

He followed her into the kitchen and placed the food on the counter while Angela turned on some music and pulled out the dishes for dinner.

“I brought extra for David, too.”

“Oh goodness, thank you!”

She called David, who took a huge plate of food and disappeared back upstairs to his bedroom.

Angela sat down at the table and waited for Shawn to join her. When he sat down across from her, he noticed her eyebrows were furrowed.

“Are you and David ok?” he asked.

“Yeah, we’ll be fine.” She sighed. “He just shared some things with me about his dad and Christmas. It was a lot. Is it ok if we don’t get into all of that right now?”

“That’s fine.”

“The gala plans have been solidified.”

“That’s great, Angela. Is it ok to let me know the details?”

“Well, we’re still gonna go with a Childhood Christmas theme, but we are going all out. I’m talking peppermint hot cocoa, cookies, snow, snowballs, karaoke, the video wall showing all the Christmas pictures that everyone sent to us. Along with pictures of the kids and a few other things I’m going to keep to myself. Sounds really fun, right?” Shawn watched Angela so excited to share all of her progress from the gala. He knew the only people who were truly in the loop were William and Tracy. So, he was thrilled that she trusted him enough to share a few details with him. Still he sat across from her with an expressionless face.

“Shawn!” Angela snapped her fingers in front of his face to snap him out of whatever trance he was in.

“Sorry. It all sounds really good.” Shawn picked up the plates from the table and placed them in the sink.

Angela got up from the table and stood next to him.

“Shawn, what’s going on? What did you need to speak to me about, and why tonight?” she asked, concerned.

He took a deep breath and looked away while he tried to get his thoughts together. Everything sounded really good in his head on the way over to her house. But he didn’t anticipate her answering the door with red eyes. He wasn’t sure what was going on with her and David, but he needed to follow his mother’s advice and be honest with her.

“Shawn?” She waved her hands in front of his face.

“Sorry.” He exhaled.

“You sure you want to talk about whatever it is?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

He waved his hand back to the table so they could sit back down. He clasped his hands in front of him and looked at her across the table.
