Chapter Three

Matt breathed in the familiar scent of the vanilla candles she loved to burn as he carried Molly through the house. Her perky little ass was presented at a perfect angle across his shoulder, and he couldn’t help turning his head and nipping at the rounded globe. Molly’s squeal of surprise was music to his ears. He ran his hand across the now slightly heated flesh. Conflicting emotions threatened to swamp him.

For three years, he had survived on memories of Molly; memories of love and laughter and a life that didn’t include violence and death. The prospect of returning to the only woman he had ever loved had kept him fighting for his life throughout his brutal captivity. Ultimately, he and two members of his team had escaped, but their injuries had been severe. Three months in the hospital followed, during which he’d convinced himself it would be too hard for her to see him in that condition, that he didn’t want her to have to fly around the world to sit and watch him heal. But now, hearing the pain and anguish he had caused by not calling her while he recuperated, he realized his decision had been selfish and ridiculous. He swore silently he would make it up to her if it took the rest of his life.

Once they entered the bedroom, Matt turned on the small lamp before lowering Molly off of his shoulder. He held onto her wrists, took a step back, and studied her from head to toe. Her hair was pleasantly mussed, her pupils dilated, and her clothes were wrinkled and slightly askew, adding to her overall appearance of a woman who had just had crazy wild sex on the floor. Matt also noted the stiff set of her shoulders, the pronounced rise and fall of her breasts as she sucked in erratic breaths, and the thin line of her scowling lips.

Molly was a force to be reckoned with when she was mad, and right now, she was beyond mad; she was furious. Matt’s cock stirred to life, and in his state of nakedness, Molly didn’t miss the reaction. Her expressive hazel eyes widened, and her tongue darted out to moisten her lower lip. She attempted to wriggle her arms from his grasp.

“I don’t think so, sweetheart.”

“So you show up out of the blue after all this time and expect me to still be waiting patiently for you? To take you back, no questions asked?”

“Isn’t that what just happened out there?” He cocked an eyebrow.

“No, Matt, what happened out there was fucking, pure and simple. I was relieved you were alive and reacted on pure adrenaline.”

“Bullshit,” he hissed.

“Did it ever cross your mind that maybe I’ve moved on? Maybe I have a boyfriend, or a husband for that matter? Three years, damn it.”

This time, when she tugged, he let go. She didn’t move away, but she did set her fists on her hips while glowering fiercely at him.
