“If you could take place in this room, the doctor will be with you in a bit.” A woman with a sweet smile guides us to a room and leaves us again. The room is white, with cabinets on one side, chairs on the other and in the middle is a big chair and some machines. This is it, finally.

We sit down on the chairs on the side, our hands entwined tightly and looking anywhere but at the chair in the middle.

Max keeps raking his teeth over his bottom lip. He is as nervous as I am now. I reach out to stop him, but he looks at me and also takes my other hand. “Won’t be long.” The whisper is low and his eyes keep darting around the room. My big Alpha reduced to a ball of nerves.

Now I’m actually in the room, now we’re actually here, my nerves are slowly receding and I rub my thumb over his knuckles right as the doctor comes in.

He looks at us and lets out a big smile, his eyes crinkling. He looks kind and comes over to us immediately, reaching out. “You must be Max and Ethan. I’m Dr. Pearson. I’ll be doing your sonogram today.”

Max takes his hand first. “Max, nice to meet you.”

“You’re a Powell, right?” The doctor looks him up and down.

“Yeah. Why?” Max takes a step back, apparently not fully sure where the doctor is going with this.

“Your mother was one of my first patients. My very first werewolf patient actually. It’s nice to see you all grown up. I’m not surprised that you were referred to me specifically by Dr. Stein.” The doctor steps to the side, looking at me. “That means that you’re Ethan, right?”

I nod and take his hand. “I am. Thank you for seeing us.”

“No problem. You’re a polite young man.” The doctor nods to the chair. “Let’s get started.”

Why does everyone have to comment on me being nice or polite? I’ve just been raised properly. It’s not like I’m weird or something. At least, I don’t think I am...

I take a deep breath and then walk to the chair, sliding onto it and sitting back. Max pulls a chair close and holds my hand. It’s good to feel him close because I’m starting to shake slightly, nerves taking over, and my breath is shallowing.

The doctor sits down on a stool on the other side of me, pulling a machine closer so we can see the screen better. “Have you ever done this before, or seen one of these being performed on someone?” His kind smile lessens my nerves somewhat.

I shake my head and from the corner of my eyes I see Max do the same.

The doctor holds up two things, one tube and one probe that looks somewhat like a flat rounded brush. “I first put some gel on your stomach and then with the probe we’ll send out ultrasounds. Those ultrasounds are interpreted by the machine and we’ll be able to see the baby on the screen.
