Chapter 6

Colt turned down a new corridor. At least, he thought it was one he hadn’t gone down before. After three weeks, they were all starting to look the same. Stone walls, tables, paintings, and the occasional human or dragon walking down the same path began to swirl together in Colt’s memory.

Boredom prodded him, urging him to explore. His parents had promised to retrieve him in two months. It would take them that long to reach Dragait. His father had turned a bit pale when Colt told them where he’d crashed, but after denying Colt was in any imminent danger, they decided to finish their current mission and then pick him up.

His days had fallen into a pattern: eat with Zeir, flirt with Zeir, have a flying lesson with him, and then the afternoons were free for Colt to explore until he met Zeir for dinner. Lunches were sometimes taken in his room, depending on his level of exhaustion after flight. He had begun to learn better control over his wings, and despite his fear of flying, he had successfully made several circles around the castle without losing his dragon shape. His dragon still insisted he was Zeir’s mate, and if Colt’s gaze slid across Zeir’s naked form when he changed, no one had commented so far.

Colt’s attraction to Zeir grew stronger every day, and if he wasn’t careful, he’d come up with a reason not to leave. Remembering all the places he still hadn’t visited had become less and less important as days went by.

The portraits in this part of the castle were brighter than the others, maybe they were newer. Colt came to a stop when he found a pair of paintings. Zeir sat on his throne in one; a black cloth covered the other as if the person had died. The painter had captured Zeir’s regal beauty to perfection, but Colt’s gaze kept drifting to the hidden painting. The amount of personal information he’d gathered about Zeir was miniscule. His people were less than willing to gossip about their king to an alien. The dragonkin were protective of their king.

Colt turned back to the cloth-covered picture. Had the person died? Who was important enough to be right next to Zeir?

A soft voice spoke behind him. “Our king’s mate.”

Colt spun around to face a short woman with black hair and a wide scar on one cheek. “Sorry to startle you.” Her impish smile didn’t reassure Colt that she meant her words.

“Um, that’s all right.” He took another step back from her. “The king has a mate?”

No! His inner dragon’s scream pierced his heart. Pain spread through his body, an inferno turning his hopes and dreams to ash. He thought the king’s mate was gone.

“No, he used to have one.” The girl’s expression turned sad. “He died, which is why his picture is clothed in black.” She pointed to the covered painting.

Oh no. Colt cleared his throat and tried to hide his relief. “Um, do you his name?”

A wrinkle appeared across her brow.
