Though we spent so much time together, I never felt we were friends, or partners for that matter, because we had such different goals. Vince never confided in me about personal matters, and that became an issue when his finances fell apart. He’d heard me complain about my own precarious money situation, but never thought to tell me that he was running low on dough, that his wife was on him to sell the store and find a new gig.

Unbeknownst to me, he started communicating with WWF and Steve Planamenta in PR. The office that we operated out of was in Coram, in the back of his video store. I’d come in a few times a week and work on the newsletter. One day, when checking the messages, I heard one from Steve at WWF.

Already paranoid because of what I was covering, and because of my finances—now I was wondering what my partner was doing behind my back. That killed my trust for him.

Our arguments grew, whether it was over the show, the newsletter, or money. He was writing checks that he couldn’t afford, and his wife was on him a lot, thinking he was crazy.

While he didn’t clue into my personal situation, I didn’t really empathize with him as the video stores were falling from his grasp in the world of Blockbuster.
