PERFORMANCE
When you arrive at an audition, be pleasant, but try to keep your task in mind. Review your characterâs needs. Simply greet the casting director and think real thoughts about the scene you will be in. Relive the moment before the scene happens. Endow the space you are in with tangible elements from your characterâs world. Feel the things that are logical to the scene, hear the sounds, slow down, and breathe. Then allow yourself the time to work moment to moment.
Even if you donât feel fully prepared, donât panic. Give way to the make-believe world. If you are given a script at the last minute, allow yourself room for error, but donât lose focus on being in the scene. Enjoy the process. Donât put pressure on yourself to book the job at an audition. Be free and play. React to new unexpected twists and turns. Above all, turn off censors in your head and find ways to pull yourself back into the imaginary world of the scenario.
Everybody wants you to succeed. In fact, casting directors, and producers need you to do well. Help them out. Be a strong, self-assured performer. Casting directors donât work if they canât bring in good performers. Producers lose money if they donât have strong actors. Audiences donât get the much-needed diversion from their everyday lives if you donât entertain them. So know how important you are and donât fall into the trap of feeling unworthy. As I said in my voice-over book, think of yourself as the hero ready to save the day, and not a doormat actor ready to be stepped on.
Finally, breathe and smile when you are done and thank the casting director. If you feel you did poorly, keep a notebook and write all your thoughts down quickly and then forget it. You can review your notes at a later time if you feel you need to revisit something. Otherwise, move on. Save your energy because youâll need to be fresh for your next exciting venture.
