“Is she alright?” Alessandra asks as I exit out of the bedroom door.

Her concern surprises me, since she’s never taken a liking to strangers in the past. She’s the type of person who has to warm up to people.

It’s been over twenty-four hours since I brought Harper home from the nightmare that unfolded at Stefano’s house. I was just glad he let us go and didn’t kill us.

I shrug my shoulders at my sister. “She won’t eat. She won’t speak. She just lays there. I can’t even get her to take a shower. Her stomach growls, but she doesn’t even flinch. I’m getting worried.”

I’m not usually one to get worried over anything, but Harper’s zombie-like state has me doing just that. If she dies from starvation or tries to kill herself, then everything I’ve done this far—deceiving my parents, risking my life with Stefano, uprooting Gio’s life, will have been for nothing.

My sister stares at the door, rubbing her arms. “Maybe she needs some girl time. Let me talk to her.”

I gesture toward the door, needing to grab a cigarette, anyway. I take the steps two at a time and round the banister as I notice Matteo and Gio playing video games on the sofa.

“I could do so much better, Matteo.” I say, grinning.

Both men turn toward me and pause the game.

“It’s about time douchebag graced us with his presence.” Matteo jokes, but I don’t laugh back.

“You finally going to fix my wall?” Gio asks. “I can’t give any more excuses to my father.”

I look over at it and cringe. “I’ll do it today.”

Gio nods as I go out to have my cigarette. Once I finish, I head to the closest store, pick up the supplies I need, and head back to the house.

Matteo and Gio are still playing video games as I drop the supplies into the corner and shrug out of my jacket. Thankfully, my sister grabbed most of my things when she moved out of our parents’ house, so I’m able to change into something more comfortable. I run up the stairs to the room I’ve been sharing with Harper, but before I open the door, I hear muffled sounds. My sister is still in the room, so I place my ear to the door to listen.

“He’s not a bad guy, I promise you and swear on my life. Believe it or not, he’s worried about you. Please eat. I’ll make whatever you want.” My sister begs, but I can’t make out any other words.

So, I open the door slowly.

Harper is still curled up on her side, and my sister’s sad eyes glance up at me. She shakes her head no and shrugs. That’s it, no more mister nice guy. It’s for her well-being and if she hates me more, so be it.

I slam the door closed, making my sister jump as she stands and scrunches her eyebrows at me.

“Get up Harper, it’s not the end of the world.” I stand firm, making sure my voice displays it.
