Walking Out

Tonight, Mazyka was determined not to miss Amos or her training with Master Starrus. She’d served dinner earlier than usual, and Pa had barely noticed, picking at his food with a lackluster appetite. Gods, what could she do about him? It was as if he’d given up on life since Ma had passed, yet Ma had taken another lover. If her father had died, would her mother have been sitting in the dining room picking at her food, or would she have left to be with the man she truly loved? Would she have rejoiced in Pa’s death or mourned him? Or both?

There was a knock at the door. Amos was here already—early, like he’d promised.

Mazyka ran to the door, already clad in her breeches and a loose shirt, with her best cloak fastened around her shoulders. She’d tied her hair with a brown ribbon that matched her eyes and patted her cheeks until they had some color in them. She was ready to see her own new lover. The first man she’d ever kissed. Hopefully, the last.

She didn’t bother farewelling Pa. He probably wouldn’t even notice she was gone.

When she opened the door, Amos’ smile was strained. She closed the door and asked him quietly, “Are you all right? You look tired.”

“I am. It’s been a hard day.” His smile brightened. “But now I’m ready to have some fun with you. I have something special to show you.”

He took her hand, his warm, callused palm already familiar, comforting.

“Where are we going?”

He shrugged and bit his lip, a lock of hair falling over his forehead. “You’ll see.” His eyes danced.

Shards, he was so good-natured, so refreshing to be with after that grumpy mage this morning. Mazyka cringed. In a few hours, she’d be with Starrus again. She’d much rather spend time with Amos, but she had to focus on the mage trials. Now that her mother had left her a legacy and told her of her mage blood, she was determined to fulfill her destiny.

Amos meandered through town, holding her hand, his gaze often scanning her face and falling to her lips. Every time it did, Mazyka’s stomach fluttered.

Older couples smiled at them as they wandered past. A few girls giggled, gossiping behind their hands. Let them gossip. Mazyka loved Amos, and that was that. As Ma had said, she should follow her heart and love freely, not caring what others thought.

“Here we are.” Amos let go of her hand to open a wooden gate in a high brick wall. He ushered her through.

“What is this place?”

“It is my uncle’s garden. He’s out of town at the moment, so he’s asked me to keep an eye on his gardens while he’s gone.”

“Are you looking after his house, too?” A three-story mansion stood at the far end of the garden, lanterns blazing in the windows as dusk fell.

Amos chuckled. “No, not the house, just the grounds. His servants are in the house. I don’t have to do much, other than make sure no foxes breach the hedge or get into the hen house to scatter the chickens.
