Chapter Fifteen

Violetta

“You don’t have to drink that,” I said, giving the mug in front of Mike a pointed look.

He was toying with the handle as though contemplating taking a sip. I, meanwhile, had ducked into the kitchen to fix myself a cup of cocoa before we settled in and realized belatedly I’d made two, forgetting that he was a vampire so he had a very specific cuisine. As far as I was concerned, it was an automatic reaction to make two of everything.

Except this guest couldn’t eat or drink anything. Which made the gesture useless.

“It seems rude to let it go to waste,” Mike said seriously, but couldn’t conceal the glimmer of laughter far back in his eyes.

“I’m serious,” I insisted. “I’m sure it will taste like motor oil or something equally unpleasant.”

And why, I wondered, did I care what it tasted like to him, to a vampire?

“I’d drink motor oil if you served it to me.”

That line would probably melt a mundane woman into her socks. It was the right combination of sweet and sincere that made the music swell during a chick flick. Well, this was one bruja who preferred a buddy cop comedy to saccharine romance. So, I raised my eyebrows at him.

“Does that line usually work for you?”

Mike chuckled and took a sip of the cocoa. He had a great poker face. He didn’t let his distaste show.

“I’m not sure. I’ve never propositioned a witch before.”

“I don’t believe you.”

He raised his hand. “Seriously, hand to the deity of your choice. Marina tackled most of the supernatural stuff. I was just along for the ride.” He shook his head as the smile lingered on his face and he appeared wistful. “I miss when we had that dynamic.”

“You miss it?”

He nodded. “Things are different now.”

His expression darkened at that, and he lapsed into a moody silence, occasionally sipping his hot chocolate. I knew his grimace wasn’t due to the taste of the drink, though.

Marina was a siren, one of only a handful of merpeople to inherit a generational curse. It meant that her voice was dangerous to most individuals on the planet, regardless of species. I would rank her just beneath Dory in terms of threat potential because of her song alone. Add to that her informal fight training and her natural attitude, and she wasn’t someone you messed with. Years ago, Marina had accidentally driven her partner, then the human version of Mike, insane with her song. He was healed now, thanks to becoming Anarchy’s servitor, but that time clearly still haunted him.

I cleared my throat, breaking the awkward silence. Those cobalt eyes snapped up to meet mine and momentarily scrambled my train of thought.

“I don’t want to be the project you take on because you’re having trouble with Marina.”

Mike opened his mouth for a moment, but then shut it just as quickly. He laughed again, but the sound was strained.

“Wow, and I thought Marina was direct. You really don’t tolerate any bullshit, do you?”

“Unless my hand is forced, no, I have a zero-tolerance policy for bullshit.
