Chapter Eleven

Thirty minutes later, we were at the Salinas police department. Charles and I walked through the reception doors together, but as I stopped to tell the police officer we were here to see Nick, Charles stormed right past and went directly to Nick’s office.

I shook my head, as did the officer on duty. He said, “Haven’t seen him in a while.”

“He’s been gone. And I swear he’s more cantankerous now than when he left.” I gave a small wave as I trailed after Charles.

“He’s not in there,” Charles said.

Behind me, I heard Nick say, “Who’s not in where?”

A flirty grin appeared on Charles’s face. “Well, hello.”

Nick smiled. “Don’t you look dapper?”

Charles winked at Nick. “Yes, I do.”

“What are you doing here?”

Charles raised his brows in a flirty manner. “Just here to see you, handsome.”

Nick’s face did not mirror Charles’. “I don’t have time for this today. What do you need?”

See, here’s the thing about Nick seeing Charles: he wasn’t surprised. I stood there, reminding myself I didn’t know how to breathe fire. If I could, I would have. Charles had gone to see Nick before he had let the rest of us know that he was home. I was sure of it.

“What? No embracing hugs? No it’s so good to see you after all these months?” I interrogated Nick.

“Hugs? This is Charles were talking about. There will be no hugs.” Nick tried to shrug it off.

Charles opened the door to the homicide division before saying, “I’ll leave you two to fight this out. There’s someone I wanted to say hi to. I’ll be right back.” Charles shut the door behind him.

I shoved Nick hard. “How long have you known he’s been back?”

Sheepish, Nick pulled out his phone from his pocket. “I got a text from him a couple of hours ago?” He said as a question, like I wasn’t going to believe him.

This stuck in my craw. Nick had known long before Charles arrived at the office today that he’d been home. If I asked Max, he’d probably lie, too. Why do I even bother? In all of the days that I had been wondering about Charles, worrying if he was still alive, Nick knew the truth. Somehow, the two of them had kept in touch. Did it have something to do with Nick’s line of work? I didn’t understand why Charles couldn’t trust me. I didn’t want to take it personally, so I blamed it on the government. I didn’t exactly have classified status any longer, not that I ever really had it to begin with. This was one I was gonna have to let go, or it would eat me from the inside. I just needed to be happy that Charles was back.

“Sure you did.” I jutted my chin as I said the words.

“Look, we can have this conversation at home. I have a crime scene unit headed back to the motel, and I want to get back out there. There’s a few more things I want to check before we release the crime scene.
