Chapter 6

Jonah Locke

“Are you sure?” I ask her that night as we’re lying in bed. “If you want more time to think about it… or if you want to go back and look at the house again before making a decision, that’s totally fine. There’s no rush.”

She stretches with a sigh. “No, I’m sure.”

“Are you really sure? I didn’t mean to pressure you into anything.” I’m starting to get worried. She’s taking this way too easily. Nothing’s ever this easy with Lia.

“No, really, Jonah, it’s fine. I love the house. We’ll have our own secured family compound, just like the Kennedys. You’ll have your own recording studio at home, and I can work out there as well. We’ll be able to relax outside, take walks, cook out. It’ll be great.”

She slides her soft, supple thigh between mine, her skin deliciously cool. My dick begins to stir.

She makes an appreciative sound and turns to me, but the moment is interrupted when my phone buzzes with an incoming text message.

“I’m ignoring that,” I say, pulling her closer.

My phone buzzes again, then again, in rapid succession. Someone’s spamming me.

She sighs. “You might as well get it.”

I grab my phone and check the screen. “Shit.”

“Who is it?”

“Dwight.”

“What the fuck?” She’s silent for a moment, and then she lets out a heart-felt groan. “Please, not that asshat again. I can’t take it.”

I chuckle. Lia and my former manager, Dwight, did not get along when they first met, and that’s putting it mildly. We haven’t seen or heard from him since I left the label and he returned to L.A.

“What the hell does he want?” she asks.

I quickly skim his multiple messages. “He’s here in Chicago for the weekend. He wants to meet with me tomorrow evening for a drink. And—oh.”

“And what?”

“Never mind.”

She grabs my phone and skims the conversation. “And… ‘please don’t bring your girlfriend.’ Seriously?” She rolls her eyes. “What a fuckwad.” Then she glares at me and says, “No.”

“No?”

“You heard me.”

I laugh. “Don’t you want to know what he wants? Why he’s here?”

“No.” She tightens her arms around me and presses her belly against my groin. “Do you remember the shitstorm he caused the last time he was here?”

My phone chimes with another message from Dwight:

It’s important, Jonah. We need to talk.

I kiss the top of her head. “He says it’s important.”

“No.”

“Lia—”

“Okay, fine. But I’m coming with you. And I pick the venue. Tell him tomorrow night at Rowdy’s, nine pm sharp. He gets thirty minutes with you, and not a second more.”

I send Dwight the information. I am curious to hear what he has to say. My former band members have a new lead singer now, and the band has a new name. I want to know how they’re doing… if they’re happy. But if Dwight came here to talk me into returning to L.A. and to the recording label, he’s wasting his time. I’m happy going it alone as a solo artist. In fact, I’ve never been happier than I am right now, both professionally and personally.
