Chapter 6

“Jason, are you ready?”

He suppressed a groan and attempted to answer as calmly as possible. He should have checked the screen to see who might be calling him after office hours.

“Ready for what, Mom?”

“Wedding venues, of course.”

“Jeez. Mom. I don’t think there will be anyone waiting to show us wedding venues at—” he stopped whining for a couple of seconds to peek at his watch, “—quarter-past six in the evening on a freaking Monday.”

“Language, young man.”

“Sorry, Mom.”

“As a matter of fact, Nancy and I are already here at the first location. Nathan is on his way. You should get over here as fast as possible.”

“What? Can’t you guys decide on your own?”

“Jason, I hate to break it to you, but your father and I are already married. So are Nancy and Harold. The ones getting married are Nathan and you. Get your cushy-tushy right here pronto.”

“Mom. For goodness—”

“I’ve sent you a text message with the address of the first location. See you soon. Ta-ta.”

“Mom.”

She hung up on him. He gazed at the darkening sky and heaved out a defeated sigh. This wedding planning had quickly turned into a nightmare. He scratched his head in irritation before making his way to the car. He knew that his mom could be persistent and stubborn when she set her mind on something. He might as well obey her and get this over and done with.

Fifteen minutes later, he arrived at a huge estate and parked his car before walking towards the front door. As if she had a well-honed sixth sense, his mom opened the door seconds before he was about to knock on it.

“Jason. So glad that you could join us. Nathan has already arrived. Come in, son. Take a look around the place.”

“Mom, I don’t think…”

“Hush. This place is perfect. It’s beautiful, grand, luxurious…It is simply…well, perfect.” His mom ended her running commentary with a flourish and an accompanying gesture.

He stared at his widely grinning mom as if he’d never met her in his entire lifetime. It seemed that she’d gone certifiably insane with the wedding planning. She was more enthusiastic than he could possibly be, and this was Nathan’s and his wedding, not hers.

“Babe.”

“Hey, love.”

He was grateful for the momentary interruption. He met Nathan halfway before they leaned in for a brief, tender kiss.

“Long day?”

“Like you won’t believe. Save me, my knight in shining armor,” he whispered frantically. “My mom has turned into a bridezilla and she’s not even the one getting married. We are.”

“My mom is equally insane, trust me.”

“What are you boys whispering about?”

“Nancy. So nice to see you. Again,” he remarked sarcastically.

“Hello, Jason. Has Linda shown you around the place yet?”

“We’ve just started, but my precious son doesn’t seem excited at all.”

“Mom, this place is…umm, fabulous, but it’s not us. Nathan and I have already said we are thinking of something simpler. We don’t want anything extravagant.”

“But this place is…”

He was about to interrupt Nancy, but his fiancé beat him to it.

“No, Mom. Jason is right. We’re going to pass on this venue.
