Ten

She was climbing a mountain. Crawling up bare, jagged rocks. Crawling through thorny plants. The wind was cold, and the sky was gray and threatening.

Suddenly, there was an opening in the rocks. She pulled herself up, and stepped through it, into a hanging valley. The grass a brilliant green. The clouds had broken into puffy white columns, with deep blue behind them. The ground was thick with flowers, and the fragrant breeze made the grass ripple, changing its nap like velvet when it was stroked. She gazed at the heart-stopping beauty in awe...

The squeak of the bedroom door made her eyes open. Wes poked his head in.

He smiled apologetically. “Didn’t mean to wake you,” he said. “I just wanted to check and see if you were awake and ready for breakfast. Go back to sleep.”

She smiled, lazily. “I was having a really good dream.”

He ventured inside, smiling. “Sorry I interrupted it.”

She thought of the unbelievable pleasure that he’d showed her after they got back from Café Kuna as her eyes traveled over his magnificent body. “Reality is even better.”

“Good to hear,” he said. “Since you’re awake, you should know that I went out and got breakfast from the coffee shop down the street. On the table is fresh orange juice, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast pastries and French roast with half-and-half.”

Her belly rumbled, making them laugh, and Ronnie sat up, tossing her hair back. “That sounds delicious,” she said, stretching, arms over her head. “I’m hungry.”

He studied her naked chest with hot-eyed fascination. “Before I lose my head, the mission I set myself was to fuel you for the mission. Operation Reconcile with the Past.”

Ronnie sauntered across the bedroom, taking her bathrobe from the hook. His eyes felt good on her body as she shrugged it on. She’d always felt self-conscious with Jareth when she was naked. Like he was judging, comparing, assessing her assets and her flaws.

Well, duh. Because he had been, constantly. Wes made her tingle and glow.

“First, coffee,” she told him. “Must have coffee.”

“On the double,” he said.

Soon she was at the breakfast table, being freshly pampered. The sandwiches were delicious. Eggs with crispy bacon and melted Gruyère on crisply toasted English muffins. Gooey pecan-crusted cinnamon rolls. Lemon-blueberry scones. Tangy, fresh-squeezed orange juice. A big cup of strong, fragrant dark roast, with a shot of cream, just how she liked it. He’d noticed and remembered. How sweet.

He’d even gotten a bunch of sunflowers for the table. Flashy, cheerful, gorgeous.

It felt wonderful, having him in her own pretty space, sipping coffee. The sky was an ominous gray, and it was going to rain today, but she was inclined to see the beauty in any natural phenomenon that came along today. It was a survival skill that all Seattleites developed, with their constantly overcast skies and omnipresent drizzle.

After she finished licking the pecan goop off her fingers, she sighed with satisfaction. “I’m ready to face the past. I’ll call Aunt Elaine.”

Aunt Elaine picked up the call quickly. “For heaven’s sake, it’s time you called!” she scolded.
