The reliance on fairy tales, which had marked nearly all the big ballets created in the last decade, was interrupted on 7 January 1898 by Raymonda, still performed today, although infrequently in its entirety outside Russia.162 The penultimate of Petipa’s ballets à grand spectacle, it represented, in Petipa’s artistic evolution, an even greater emphasis on autonomous dance; its nearly stationary narrative pushed Petipa further along the line of dance for the sake of dance.

On 30 May 1896, thirteen days after The Pearl, Vsevolozhsky wrote to Petipa:

If you are recovered from your Moscow tribulations, would you perhaps feel able to receive Mr Glazunov to give him your thoughts about the subject of the ballet he is to compose for the 1897–1898 season? I would like him to have more time to think about his music. At the last dinner at the Kremlin, the emperor’s orchestra played a [illegible] by him which delighted me. It’s Delibes fused with Tchaikovsky. He’s definitely the man we have been looking for to compose ballets.163
