They went on like that for a while. Which . . . wasn’t really helping my case. If Cory had done it, wouldn’t he have told Ray, his BFF?

The next morning, I returned to school after four days away. But instead of trying to catch up on classwork (something my teachers really would have appreciated), I spent most of the day following Abby Durbin.

Abby was Cory’s longest-lasting girlfriend to date. They started dating last spring and made it all the way to October, when Cory dumped her. They were a weird couple. Abby, petite, pale, and with eyes that seem way too small for her head, is intensely introverted. Cory is . . . well, Cory. (Plus, I can’t imagine how a relationship with Cory would work when he always seems attached to Ray. Maybe they were a thruple?) My thinking was, if anybody knew about Cory and his secret porn-site-making ability, it would be Abby. Or Ray, I guess. But I couldn’t imagine Ray betraying their precious bro code.

But Abby was proving to be a tough interview. She was one of those intensely punctual weirdos who clutched their books to their chests and practically ran from class to class so they wouldn’t be late. She was a moving target, hard to pin down. Which is why when I saw her dart into the counselor’s office during fifth period, I skipped econ and hovered outside the door, waiting for her to emerge. She couldn’t talk about her college applications forever!

My phone pinged. Two texts from Avery blooped up.

AVERY: I know you’re on a job or something cause your MIA

AVERY: but if you wanna break? dinner tonight?
