Marco frowned as he heard the demanding knock on the door of his study. It was nearly midnight and he had been working for the last three hours, coming to his study immediately after dinner.

Tomorrow, before he firmly asked Francine to leave, he intended to make it clear to her that there was no way she could expect to take Angelina away from him.

Thinking of Angelina made him think of Alice, though, and thinking of Alice made him ache for the feel of her delicious body in his arms, and her equally delicious mouth against his own, just as it had been this afternoon.

‘Marco, I know you’re in there.’

His frown deepened as Francine walked in.

‘I’ve been thinking…about Angelina,’ she told him coolly. ‘She is my granddaughter and that means the world to me, but I can see the situation from your point of view. Aldo was your closest relative and your heir and now that he is dead…’ She gave a small shrug. ‘I can make things easy for you, Marco, or I can make them difficult.’

He watched her, without saying anything, but then there was no need for him to do so; he had already guessed the real purpose of her visit to the palazzo!

‘If you could, for instance, see your way to…putting a certain sum of money at my disposal, I am sure we can come to some mutually beneficial agreement over Angelina’s future. I am thinking in terms of, say…’ She paused and gave another small shrug.

‘Well, let us say, for instance, one million dollars…That is hardly anything to you, Marco. You are a very, very wealthy man…’

‘You want to sell me your granddaughter, is that what you are saying?’ Marco asked her bluntly. ‘I had heard that you had attempted to sell your daughter to the highest bidder—’

‘How dare you say that?’ she stopped him, her face an unpleasant shade of red.

‘I dare say it because it is the truth. You put Patti into the meat market the minute she was old enough to be there.’

‘She had a very wealthy boyfriend when she was modelling,’ she interrupted him.

‘A wealthy boyfriend…’ Marco’s mouth compressed angrily. ‘The man was over three times her age and already married. You sold her to him.’

‘She wanted to be with him.’ She was almost screaming at him now. ‘She enjoyed being with him a damn sight more than she enjoyed being with your tight-fisted cousin. When I think of the opportunities she lost because of him…She wanted to leave him. Did he tell you that? She was going to come to LA…He killed her.’

‘No, if anyone killed both of them it was you, Francine. You were the one who destroyed their marriage with your greed, and your soulless craving for money. History repeats itself, doesn’t it? You sold your daughter and now you want to sell her child to me. One million dollars, you say…’

Slowly Marco shook his head. He was tempted to give in and pay her, but he knew that if he did the matter wouldn’t end there.
