How to Be Mindful: Stop, Look, and Listen

Mindfulness can be practiced for decades, or in a simple moment. Our brain is designed to compare information all the time, measuring one set of data against another. But in the process we sometimes overlook the simple wonder of being. Mindfulness is a way to relax by really living in the moment, not waiting for the next one.

A simple way to attain this involves being willing to slow down, to truly wake up and smell the coffee. The sequence is simple: Stop, look, and listen. When you stop, you give your brain a chance to appreciate what is happening here and now. When you look, you draw in the world around you into your inner world, and because you have stopped you can do this in a calm and thoughtful way. When you listen, you can hear the words of someone else, and because you have stopped and are looking, you can truly attend to how they feel, what they say, and how to help if you are being asked. This helps the other person feel valued, and feeling valued can decrease their own stress levels, cortisol, and increase their oxytocin. By using this simple technique, you can be more mindful, more effective, and thereby less stressed. And being around mindful people makes other people feel less stressed as well, so your mindfulness can have a great benefit to the other people in your life. Stop, look, and listen.
