‘You do a very difficult job,’ James said to Matilda as they were stood by his Land Rover.

‘Have you only just realised that?’ she said with a smile.

‘No. It’s just… you know that people have secrets, you can’t know everything about everyone, especially those you only know through work, but you don’t think someone could hide something so huge and continue as if nothing’s happened. I’ve been out for meals with Nigel. I’ve laughed and joked with him. I’ve been in his home when Andrew was there and they seemed like any other normal father and son, yet… I can’t get my head around it.’

‘People do what they have to do in order to survive.’

‘I suppose if Andrew had served a decent sentence, I’d be able to understand, but seven years in a young offenders’ institute, that’s nothing. What must Natasha’s family have been thinking when they found out he was released?’ James was looking down to the ground. The brightness had gone from his ice-blue eyes. He looked sad, almost on the verge of bursting into tears.

‘Are you going to be all right?’ Matilda asked.

‘I don’t know.’

‘Do you want me to come back with you? I’m almost done for the day.’

‘No. You’ve got plenty to do.’

She stepped forward and hugged him. James held her tight. It was a while before he let go.

‘I’m sorry,’ he said.

‘What for?’

‘The house falling apart and having to live in that shitty caravan.’

‘It’s a Winnebago,’ she corrected him with a broad smile.

‘It’s a sodding caravan. I’ll look online, find us a nice property to rent.’

‘Where’s all this coming from?’

‘From here.’ He tapped his head. ‘And a little from here.’ He tapped his heart.

‘You’re a good man, James Darke,’ Matilda said.

‘I try to be.’ He opened the door and stepped in behind the wheel.

Matilda watched as he started the engine and drove, carefully, away. This was the first time James had been so close to her work. He was seeing the depravities people did to each other that she saw on a daily basis and he was struggling with it. She felt herself warm as she returned to the station. If it was possible, she loved James even more.
