Chapter Five
Nick Kringle chatted with his dad over early morning coffee as he waited for the assistants to load his SUV with the deliveries for Christmas Eve. Heâd crept away from Dylanâs bed, not wanting to wake the man whoâd given him so much pleasure and stolen his heart. He smiled at his dad, only half listening as thoughts of Dylan played in his mind. Nothing would stop him from seeking Dylan out again. Later when night had fallen and everyone waited in the hope of something special beneath the gift-wrap, he intended to visit Dylan. He thought about Dylanâs kiss with a sigh. He knew Dylan liked him as much as he liked Dylan, but he guessed that a weight of sadness misted Dylanâs choices. I wish heâd feel better.
âIâd better get to work, Dad.â He swished the coffee remaining in his cup, drank it, and handed the cup to his dad.
He checked the list of packages and addresses. A special delivery caught his eye. The assistants had placed a stack of magazines at the edge of the trunk. Tied together with white twine, the magazines were bound for a kiosk on Main Street. Nick looked twice at the address, recognition making him raise his eyebrows. I wonder if Dylanâs car is still there? Probably not, because after all he wished it wouldnât be.
Nick faced a long shift. Christmas Eve was always busy. Heâd be back to the dispatch office for other loads during the day. First stopâthat kiosk. Nick leaped into the driving seat and turned the key in the ignition. His red SUV roared into life. He swung it around on the wide forecourt of the family business and drove out of the gates. The traffic was already thick. Nick turned on the radio. A Christmas song he recognized from his childhood played and he joined in.

Dylan woke late. Nick wasnât beside him. He rolled into the place in his bed where Nick had lain, and he breathed in the soft fragrance left behind. Masculine and with a vague scent of pine trees, it made him smile, even though disappointment that Nick was gone pricked at him. He knew Nick had to go to work early because Nick told him the night before. Heâd said how great it was they met and that they must get together again soon, but Dylan had hung back from making arrangements even though it seemed Nick wanted him to. Nick hadnât pushed. A sigh of regret escaped Dylan.
He got out of bed and dragged on the bathrobe that hung behind his bedroom door. He sifted through the memories of the night before. Theyâd eaten toasted sandwiches and sipped on a little bourbon as they sat side by side in Dylanâs bed. Dylan put the crockery theyâd left on the counter into the dishwasher. He missed Nick. He made coffee and leaned on the kitchen counter. Did I really wish Iâd get that job when Nick asked me what my Christmas wish
