The morning flew by, and even Gloria and Amber pitched in and helped for a while. By noon when Buck called them all in for dinner Coralie was one aching lump of muscles. She hadnât realized that shoveling snow could be such hard and heavy work. Not only that but both of her hands felt as if they were rubbed raw, and although she hadnât taken off her gloves to look she was almost sure her burned hand was bleeding.
She hobbled over to the back porch and sat down on the top step. It had been cleared of snow early that morning, and the sun had pretty well dried it.
She wondered if sheâd be able to stand and walk again, but sincerely doubted it. A glance around the barnyard told her she had a lot to show for her pain. Theyâd dug paths to all the outbuildings, and toppled the snow from the doors so they could open them. If the sun stayed out for a few days it should melt a good share of what remained in the barnyard.
She was still sitting there when Jim approached from the direction of the garage. He walked with that spring in his step as always, and she wondered how he could get around so easily when she could hardly move.
As he got closer he frowned. âCoralie, whatâs the matter?â He leaned over her and put his hand on her shoulder.
She managed a small smile. âNothing that about twelve hours in a tub of hot steaming water and a month in traction wonât cure,â she assured him.
âAw, honey, Iâm sorry,â he said regretfully. âI was so busy that I forgot you were a novice at this type of thing. Here, Iâll carry you insideââ
âNo,â she said emphatically as he reached down to pick her up. âI donât need to be carried around like a child. I can walk.â
Brave words, but she wasnât sure she could follow them up with the action. âJust help me to stand.â
He put his hands under her arms and raised her gently to her feet, which also hurt from being confined in boots that hadnât yet been broken in. She clamped her teeth together to keep from moaning as he put his arm around her and assisted her to walk into the house.
Inside, he helped her out of her coat and hat, then started to pull off her gloves, but stopped abruptly when she cried out in pain. âWhat theâ¦â he muttered and proceeded to peel the left one off carefully. Her palm was red and blistered.
âDamn it, Coralie,â he said tightly, and gently removed the right one. As sheâd feared that one was bleeding.
He swore lustily, and this time he didnât bother to ask, but swung her up into his arms and walked out of the kitchen and down the hall toward the bathroom.
ââWhere are you taking me?â she asked.
âIâm going to run hot water in the tub and put you in to soak,â he informed her.
