After leaving Doc’s house, Mike and Mel stopped at his ranch so he could pack more clothes, toiletries, and ammo for his service revolver. He also grabbed his bag containing a Glock 22, his smaller Ruger, and his shotgun with plenty of shells.

Mel wrapped her arms around him, not wanting to let go. “You expecting a war, Sheriff?” She tilted her face toward his. He leaned in and kissed her. Again, she felt that exciting rush of electricity between them.

“Nope. But I won’t be caught off guard either. We don’t know what these lunatics are planning. Need to be ready.”

“I feel so much more secure knowing I have you beside me.”

“Well, now you can’t get rid of me,” he said, unable to contain his grin. He squeezed her tightly, and their lips met with a fiery passion.

“I like the sound of that,” she replied once they reluctantly parted.
