13. Ivy

Once again, she dreamt of being followed through the trees by a man dressed in furs, only this time, his face was clear. Green eyes pierced her, pinning her in place as Dedrik closed the distance between them. Murmuring something she didn’t hear, his firm lips pressed to hers, his beard tickling her cheeks as he stole the breath from her lungs.

Ivy awoke with her face pressed into the furs, nipples hard points as her thighs clenched together in need. Drawing in a deep breath, she realized she recognized the scent on the furs, the smell of violets and fresh rain haunting her and making her think she was still dreaming.

Raising her head, she glanced behind her to see Dedrik’s large frame lying along the other side of the fire. Wulf was curled beside him, and she assumed Umbra must be in the trees above since there was no rain to hide from.

She could see the sky to the east beginning to brighten with the approaching dawn and decided there was no reason to try going back to sleep. She needed to clear her head of the lingering desire before she did something foolish.

Standing quietly, Ivy moved out of the thicket, walking up a hill until she could see across the fields surrounding them. Dew soaked into the hem of her dress, but she ignored it, staring toward the mountains. She didn’t know much, but she knew that she had to have traveled quite a way into the past for them to look so different. It was the second day after the night of the ball, and she was running out of time to find her way home before her family returned.

Ivy remained on the crest of the hill, thinking as the sun rose over the horizon. She had nothing to go off other than what Dedrik had said, but she’d already tried wishing to go home and nothing had happened. She felt like he was right though, or close.

Fingering the locket, she opened it and looked inside.

“I don’t know what to do, Mother. How do I get home before they find out I’m gone?”

Not really expecting an answer, she still sighed when nothing but the rustling of grass in the wind met her. Something told her the locket was the key since everything had changed after she put it on, but she didn’t know what to do to reverse whatever she’d done. She wasn’t sure she believed that gods were listening.

“It had to have happened in the clearing, so maybe I need to be there to make the wish,” she said as she snapped the locket shut again, raising her head to gaze across the forest. “Gods, or wishes, or whatever brought me here, I need to go back.”

“Go back where?”

The deep voice made her whirl around, heart thundering in her ears. For such a large man, Dedrik could move with an eerie silence, and she hadn’t realized he’d come up the hill behind her.

Trying to slow her breathing, she pulled her shoulders back as she faced him.
