Chapter Seventeen â Quincy
âAnd we could leave a section open here so that we can sleep under the stars.â Henry held out his arms wide as they discussed plans for the mega-treehouse. Although for now, Quincy had decided to keep the mega plans to himself.
Like in business, he planned to start small and then let the treehouse grow naturally. Sometimes you had to learn what you needed as you went rather than planning the whole thing out in advance.
Plans changed and the need to be flexible was a good character trait to have.
Quincy was flexible and nimble, ready to change direction in a heartbeat if it meant closing a deal or getting better terms.
âI like that idea.â Quincy put his hands on his hips. âI think we are ready to go.â
âSeriously?â Henry whirled around to face Quincy. âWeâre actually going to build a treehouse? Here?â
âYes.â Quincy dropped his hands to his sides. âI wouldnât have discussed this with you if we werenât going to build it.â
âIs this because you like my mom?â Henryâs unexpected question took Quincy by surprise.
âNo.â Quincy shook his head and then beckoned Henry to him. âLetâs sit down here.â
The tree they planned to use as the base for the treehouse had lost a large branch a couple of winters ago in a storm that had rushed down from the mountainside with the force of a hurricane. Quincy often sat here when he visited the house. It was his thinking spot.
Heâd leave his phone inside and come out here to sit and be one with nature. As he absorbed the world around him, heâd reconnect with the deepest, most primal side of himself. It was a form of mindfulness, he didnât need a book or a guru to tell him this was where he would find his inner peace.
âBut you do like my mom.â It wasnât a question and Henryâs intense gaze bore into Quincy.
âI do like your mom. I like her a lot.â Quincy rested his hand on Henryâs shoulder. âI like you, too. I want us to be friends, Henry. I want to be here for you. For things like bring-your-dad-to-school day. For sports and recitals. School plays. Anything. Everything.â
âWhy? Youâre not my dad.â Henry jutted out his chin defiantly but there was a different message in his eyes, one of hope.
âNo. No, Iâm not your dad. But the one thing I learned from Clint was that family isnât about the blood in your veins. Family is more than that. Itâs about the bonds that tie us together. Bonds that run deeper than blood. Bonds that are unbreakable.â Quincy placed his hands on his knees and stared out into the distance.
âAnd you think we could have a bond like that?â Henryâs small voice was carried away by a sudden breeze that ruffled the leaves above their heads.
âI hope so. If thatâs what you want, of course.â He half-turned to face Henry. âThe most important thing to me is that you and your mom are happy.â
âI want my mom to be happy, too,â Henry replied wistfully.
