Frustrated by Edison’s overprotective urges and having to guide Lochlan’s horse back to the mayor’s house like I was leading a child’s pony, I was in a foul mood. By the time we arrived at the mayor’s house, I was also hungry enough that Muffin was starting to look appetizing.

Whatever the dynamic was here in Reeling, the shifter didn’t want to risk displeasing Edison by taking us to his pack when the rancher argued against it. Going to the pack was a key step. Lochlan and I could have used it as an opportunity to interrogate them and find out why they were at the crime scenes.

The mayor’s wife, Edna, met us at the door. The first thing I noticed was the smell. The tantalizing scents of dinner cooking spurred me to rudely push past her and run to the kitchen without so much as a greeting to the woman.

“I apologize for my partner,” said Lochlan, but I was beyond caring about manners at this point.

A large pot was on the stove. I wasted no time heaping up the mashed potatoes and scooping up the hearty meat and gravy mixture onto my plate.

I plopped into the chair and dug into my food while Lochlan was getting his own food. She was also thoughtful enough to make up a plate for Muffin since I was being a horrible dog owner and didn’t make him one again. Go me. I really was selfish at times, which wasn’t a comfortable realization for me.

“Long day?” Edna asked.

“Yes, and we weren’t able to stop for food, as evidenced by Marty’s excessively rude behavior tonight,” said Lochlan.

I didn’t even bother to pause in my eating to respond. Food was my priority and I doubted Edna truly minded. She seemed like a provider and had gotten upset when we skipped the last dinner. She was probably thrilled to see us devouring her food.

“My Al used to come home like that all the time. No offense taken.”

There was a knock on the door and Edna hopped up to answer it. She let in a panting Estelle.

“I … thought … I saw you … two … come in.”

I raised an eyebrow but gave her a minute to get composed. Surely, dinner wasn’t such a cause to rush. Before I could comment, Lochlan piped up.

“What do you have for us?” he asked.

“Let the poor thing catch her breath,” said Edna. “You all will get plenty of time to talk. Me and Al are going out for dinner, so you’ll have the place to yourselves.”

She poured Estelle a glass of milk. “Enjoy some milk,” Edna said and she walked out the door.

“That’s convenient,” I said.

“You had something for us, Estelle?” prompted Lochlan.

She stared at the fae, apparently lost for words being the center of her crush’s attention. Oh lord, how did Lochlan tolerate the drooling? This woman was ridiculous. I halfway expected her to start humping his leg in a show of lust-filled abandonment.

“Yes, I examined the remains from the first site and the second site.
