I couldn't get Chester's words out of my head as I walked up the stairs in my house. What had he meant by all of that? And what was he so afraid of? Could humans with trace amounts of magic cause him harm or was it simply an annoyance?

Chester's negative outlook shook me. I'd already had enough negative thoughts but after hearing his words, I realized that part of me wanted him to tell me it would turn out okay in the end. Despite the negativity, the part that hurt the most was the fact that he wasn't able to help us. He could have, but it was too great a risk for him. I frowned. How many of us weren't taking a risk?

Then there was his question on my way out. What was the meaning of Chester's last words to me? Was it a generic warning or was it something more? Maybe he was trying to help, after all. Did he want me to cast the spell regardless of the consequences? I'd already decided to prior to seeing him. Did he know what I was thinking? Was that his way of pushing me?

Pausing at the top of the stairs, I turned to James. "No word about Winter's Haven, okay?"

His brow furrowed.

"There's nothing we can do about it, especially not right now, and I don't want the others to be more stressed. For once, we can let the authorities deal with something without getting involved. We have to stay on track, our goal is the dragon queen." I was doing my best to fake confidence. I might not know what the outcome would be, but I knew I had to appear strong to my friends for their sake if nothing else.

Moving again, I walked to the guest room where we'd left McKenzie. The door was mostly closed and I pushed it open to peek inside. Lucy and Lyla were still sitting in their chairs in the corner of the room.

Lyla stood when she saw me and walked over to meet me at the door. "She's still asleep."

McKenzie's face was still pale, but it did look a little better than it had when I left. I hoped that was a sign that she was improving.

"Thanks, Lyla. Do you need a break?" I asked.

She shook her head. "You weren't gone very long. How'd it go? Did you find out about the spell?"

I pursed my lips, wondering how to respond. The simple answer was, no, I hadn't. However, the more I let Chester's words echo in my mind, the more I thought he'd told me to cast the spell myself. "Not exactly."

Her shoulders dropped, her disappointment obvious.

"We're working on something, though. It's going to be okay," I said. "Can you please let me know as soon as McKenzie wakes?"

She nodded, then walked back over to her seat.

I closed the door behind me and backed into the hallway where James was waiting.

"How is she?" he asked.

"Still recovering," I said.

Taking James's hand, I led him down the stairs.
