Chapter Seven

Esme went back to the mirror and rewound the dinner scene from the night before. There were definitely sparks—on both sides. She leapt up from the small couch in her hotel room and danced around the room in glee. “Yippee! Look, Tripod, they’re finding their happy-ever-after all on their own!”

Tripod yawned and stuck out a brown striped leg, licking it from top to bottom.

“Yeah, you don’t care. Do you.” But she did!

She’d managed to rescue Tanner and Bonita from the dire straits her predecessor had left them in. Bonita was no longer staying in her house waiting for her absentee father to come home and give her attention, now she was out in the workforce and working for Tanner Scott himself.

Best of all, they’d almost kissed, all on their own!

Poor Tanner! Left to wallow away his time in misery as a troll. How in the world her predecessor had intended for the two of them to get together, she had no idea. But—a little tweaking here, and a lot of tweaking there, and now they were living in the same house. Now, the question was: should she tweak a little more or, because they were destined to fall in love, would they take care of it themselves?

She thought of what her mentor, Mrs. Wigglewort would say: “Esme, when you’ve mixed up the batter and put the cake in the oven, just walk away and let it bake. If you keep opening it up and checking, all the romance in the world won’t get that cake to rise.”

So, time to walk away.

And that left her with some free time to fill. A wave of her hand and her hair was straightened, her outfit a flirty skirt and top with sandals, perfect for the New Mexico heat. She checked in the wall mirror. “Looking good, girlie.” She smiled down at Tripod. “Let’s go hit those stores!”

“Mer-row?”

“Sorry. You stay here and enjoy the patio.” She opened the sliding glass door that led out onto her private walled patio and he hopped out into the sun, settling down for a cat-bath.

She’d resolutely done no shopping in the cute little boutiques that lined the Main Street of Magic and she desperately wanted to check out what a town like this had to offer. Leaving her magic mirror on the bed, she set a protection spell on the room, put out the do-not-disturb sign, and locked the door.

Esme whistled a happy tune as she walked down the hallway of the California Hotel in her strappy sandals, her fun little skirt swishing away, but as she headed for the lobby, the view in her magic mirror changed. The image of someone Esme hadn’t really paid attention to, Eduardo Cruz, appeared. If Esme had seen it she would have wondered why her magic mirror thought Eduardo was important to the brewing romance between Tanner and Bonita, and why the edges of the mirror had gone dark, a sure sign of impending romantic disaster.
