Over time, they were able to adjust to living on Adna in the ghost town. Baston figured out how to get the electricity back on in the houses, and the three of them chose a large one to be their home.

They were able to grow crops and sustain themselves pretty well. A few times when they ran low or the crops weren’t growing, Baston thought about the Astro Fox. Being the only one who knew where it was meant he could make money off of it as a last resort.

Every time this thought crossed his mind, he wondered how he would find a buyer. He couldn’t communicate with the outside world, not yet, and then what would he say? “Hey, I have a precious mineral for sale?” Then he would think about his kids, and put the idea out of his mind. Ruby was almost two years old and Halo was almost four. They needed to learn integrity and how to do the right thing from him. It wasn’t right to give away a secret that he’d been entrusted with.

A small boy played near the house, showing his little sister how to make a small fort out of sticks. The three of them watched as she extended a glowing hand and knocked his creation over, laughing and running away.

“Dad, she destroyed my fort!” The little boy ran up to Baston with tears in his eyes.

Baston was happy his children were able to entertain themselves with such small games outside. He’d had far too much stimulation when he was his son’s age.

“Mom, tell her to stop.” The little boy tugged on Cherie’s arm and pointed to his sister who ran in circles, a light trailing behind her.

“Ruby’s just little, Halo,” Sca said to the little boy. “She’ll grow up, and then you’ll miss her knocking over your creations and wanting to play with you.”

Cherie had liked the name Ruby, and wanted to name the little girl after the one who’d fallen during their escape to help them remember how they’d gotten there.

For years now, Baston had been gathering the things they would need to fly a ship off the planet, and they’d be able to go soon and replenish their supplies. Things were going great for the little family, and they had gotten used to living alone. He wasn’t sure what would change when they were able to travel off the planet, but he knew they’d always return to their little slice of Adna.
