Chapter 8
After many hours, we had taped together a thick stack of documents. Most of what was in the stacks were things of no consequence. Eve had sorted everything, and the shorter stack was the most interesting. There were intake papers for about ten patients in that stack. I wondered aloud why anyone would be shredding the documents the patients had filled out. Then, I thought back to what Becky the receptionist had mentioned about suspecting Dr. Yu of healthcare fraud.
âI suppose if you donât have a record of what the patient originally came to the office for then you can make up whatever you want and justify all the extra stuff youâre doing,â I said.
Eve looked over the papers. âDo you think this had anything to do with Stephanie?â
I rubbed my face and looked over everything that was spread out on my table. âI donât know yet. I think weâre still missing some pieces to this puzzle because Iâm not getting a clear picture yet.â
My phone rang on the counter next to me. I walked over and saw a number I did not immediately recognize. âThis is Lockhart,â I said into the cellphone.
âThis is Walt Bean with the U.S. Marshals, you gave me your card a few days ago after we hit a house after an arrest,â said the voice.
I vaguely recognized the voice. âOh, right. How did that go?â I asked.
âWell, we have some things you might be interested in seeing. Can you come by the office today downtown and take a look?â
âAbsolutely,â I said.
I got directions from Deputy Marshal Bean and hung up.
Eve and I decided she would go and start moving her stuff from the house to her new apartment. The following day would be when the movers would help her with the washer, dryer, and a few other pieces of furniture. She was packing light and intended to have an estate sale to get rid of everything that was left in the house and then to sell it as well. It would take her a while dealing with lawyers since technically it was still in her dadâs name and Stephanie was the one who had power of attorney over his affairs.
We followed each other to Billings in our respective vehicles and then she went west to her house and I went east towards downtown. The marshals were located at the federal courthouse. I had darkened the doorway of enough courthouses over the years while working at the bureau and had no interest in seeing the inside of another one, but I guess my luck had run out.
I parked across the street and went inside. I was greeted by security who wanted to know who I was and where I was going. I signed in and then went through the scanning procedure which seemed more thorough than going through security at the airport. After putting my belt and shoes back on, I waited in the lobby for them to call Bean for me.
A stocky man in his 30s with a long black beard came out and shook my hand.
