As I went by the Luckenbooths,

I saw a lady fair.

She had longpendles in her ears

And jewels in her hair…

"Shoosh!" If Mowdiewarp couldn't feel his knees, he still knew better than to be singing about ghaisties in the haunted streets of Edinburgh. Or bogeys. Or wulves. Twitcher subsided into sulks.

The night was dark and cold and damp, not fit for man nor beast nor ghaistie. Twitcher might have asked where they were going, were he not so capernoited, and were not Oxter such a carnaptious old deil. Still, he wondered, and finally whispered that very question in Mowdiewarp's ear.

Mowdiewarp shook his head. "I dinna ken." Oxter turned and glared and hissed that anybody with a grain of sense wouldn't choose such a moment to be bumping their gums.

"Sich a moment as wha'?" muttered Twitcher. Mowdiewarp shook his head.

Oxter scowled. Before he could start to scold again, the attention of all three was caught by the sound of a kerfuffle up ahead. They exchanged glances and crept forward to the corner of an ancient tall building. The noises were louder here. Unpleasant noises, thumps and gurgles. Again, they looked at one another, then inched forward to peek around the corner, one above the other, like a tipsy totem pole.

The narrow street ended there in a cul-de-sac, the scene illuminated by a strange red glow that emanated from a knife held in the hand of a man cloaked in black. Impossible to see his face in the shadows of his hood. Impossible not to see what he was doing. Another swish, a thud The man stood up, a bloody knife held in one hand.

"Bogey," said Twitcher, with considerable assurance.

It turned toward the watchers.

As one, they fled.
