No, he didn’t tell me so much as warned me. Be prepared, Sabrina. I’m coming in.

This man. He makes my heart gallop and stop all at once, even when I know it’s just a game to him, his impromptu entertainment for the evening. A rich man’s amusement.

How much can I make Sabrina obsess over a possible kiss?

Obsessed is exactly what I am. Every time his hand negligently brushed over my back, when he leaned closer to say something, or the long seconds his lingering gaze called to me, I thought that was it. When it didn’t happen, when confusion and disappointment tidal waved over me, when I was certain he declared that kiss to toy with me, I wanted to scream, grab his lapels, and smash my mouth against his just to get it over with.

Which, now that I’m thinking about it, was probably his devious plan all along.

Jerk.

I felt like a jerk myself for admitting to Jordan I was here with him because I was lonely. I’m a grown, independent woman, yet I haven’t lived by myself in... well, ever. Before moving in with Cody, Becky and I shared a small apartment together. After Cody and I committed, she had to downsize. In college, I always had roommates. Now I have this beautiful but empty apartment waiting for me, and the thought of heating something quick in the microwave or picking up takeout for one made me realized I didn’t want to go home and stare at the wall on a Friday night.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Jordan thinks I’m some tragic female who gets woeful without a man in her life, or worse, ties my worth with being in a relationship.

So you’re using me.

That was a strong accusation, yet I couldn’t disagree with him. At the same time, I wouldn’t spend the evening with just anyone. If that was the case, I would be at the club that guy from the park invited me to-that came back to me in the middle of the photoshoot-instead of being charmed and exasperated by Jordan.

His rich chuckle reaches my ear, igniting delicious tingles all along my skin. There must be hundreds of people at the night market, with hundreds more operating the booths and managing the outdoor fair, yet amidst the active conversations, booming laughter, and loud, lively music, one smooth, male voice entirely ensnares my ears.

“It’s delicious,” he assures the lady behind the stall, tasting the Thai iced-tea in a sealed plastic cup with a straw. “I don’t think I’ve had a version quite as good.”

The older lady with an elf cap perched on her head, who’s been trying to sell him on everything from beverage to appetizers to desserts, beams at him with pride. She’s framed by strings of large, blinking holiday lights, happily communicating with Jordan for the last five minutes in the universal language: food.

I sip at my straw. It is yummy.
