And now he’s being sapped, not by ticks, but by a loan shark because the juice is running, each minute of each day, and he’s standing in line amidst the clamor of this loony bin. A thought comes to him: he could bolt from the store, phone in hand. Like when they were kids stealing comic books and candy from Leo’s. Just cop the merchandise and take off.

But it’s not an option.

What the fuck’s taking so long? Roddy wonders. He cranes his neck and sees a woman at the counter arguing with the clerk, something about a price discrepancy. Her voice rises above the din, it’s ear-drum-piercing, shrill. The clerk tries to placate not agitate the woman. At least two more minutes pass; Roddy could explode. Finally, the dispute is resolved.
