CHAPTER 25

Samara

The Captain seems to be in a generous mood.

Samara popped another shrimp in her mouth, collapsing on the faded red chaise. Stark gold curtains covered the glass-less windows of the third-floor tavern room. Her sister sat cross-legged on the double bed, stuffing her face with warm sweet rolls. Only the peppered grease from the baked fish she’d devoured earlier remained on the platter in front of her.

Seraphina’s caftan was pale in comparison to the deep green brocaded blanket under her, the four wooden posters of the bed touching the high ceiling.

“It’s no surprise your captain has friends in such a wretched place as this.” Seraphina licked the butter off her fingers.

“His connections can be useful,” Samara said, closing her eyes to bask in the comfort of those cozy cushions. All that running and worry had worn her body to the bone. The only thing lacking from perfection was a cold mug of ale.

“As much as I hate to say this,” Seraphina said, “we’re going to need him and his connections.”

Samara opened an eye. “For what?”

“To get the book and the scroll back from Priest Christian.”

My sister is clearly insane. “We are not getting anything except a one-way ticket out of the Isles.”

Seraphina threw a pillow, landing right on Samara’s face. She shot up in the chaise.

“Do you have any idea what I’ve been through to get them?” Seraphina glared at her.

Samara set the pillow to the side. “Seeing you about to die gave me a pretty good idea.”

Her sister’s eyes lowered and she set aside the plate of bread. Samara got up from the chaise and climbed up on the bed next to her.

“I almost lost you today,” Samara said, her voice cracking as she put her arm around her twin. “I can’t risk that again.”

“This is so much bigger than all of us, Sam. The fact that the Order wanted to—to punish me for what I knew just confirms it. The old Ancient Order Seminary foretold everything that will happen. There’s more evil coming.”

No way a bunch of nuns and priests could predict the future. That was impossible.

Yeah, and so was magic up until a few weeks ago.

“Then I came here and found the prayer circle, where it predicted every place the sea serpent would attack, and where to find the scroll.”

Seraphina turned to her, grabbing both hands. “Sam, that scroll will tell you how to harness the magic of the scepter.”

No. Nothing can help me control that thing. Its magic was too powerful for anyone to master.

“That doesn’t make any sense, Phina,” Samara said finally.

“It will once we have the book and the scroll.”

Was this what it felt like when she proposed a crazy idea to her sister? No wonder Serephina was perpetually frustrated.

“You need to get some rest. It’s been an incredibly long day.”

Seraphina raised a brow. “Stop patronizing me.”

How is it that I’m the rational one in this conversation?

“All I’m saying is it’s a lot to take in, and today has been hard—to say the least.
