Miranda read the question again, unconsciously scratching at her scalp. How could the fact that one had relatives living or not have any impact of qualifying for a weight loss study? The question seemed completely irrelevant. Miranda could feel Samantha watching her.

Miranda’s pen hovered over the answer. She’d never told Sam that her Aunt Maggie wasn’t her actual aunt, so this must be the question she wanted her to lie about. She could tell her best friend now that Aunt Maggie was just a family friend and that for all intents and purposes she was an orphan, but she hated that word, hated acknowledging that fact about her life Instead, she made a show of hesitating, and wrinkled up her brow. Sam stiffened, but let out a breath as the moment she circled the no. Satisfied with her answer, Sam moved away as if not wanting to be caught trying to sway a friend to lie, and became suddenly intrigued by a work of art on the wall.

Miranda’s smiled, then looked at the fourth question, and let out an involuntary huff of breath.
