Carrie was insistent on Logan spending the night. She didn’t feel comfortable with him driving the streets with Rad and his gang on the lookout. She made up the bed for him in her spare room—technically her old bedroom. Once Logan was settled, I went with Carrie to her room. We both stripped inside her bathroom, checking each other out. I had just as many bruises as she did—but her cuts exceeded mine. I felt heavy just looking at her—but I can’t help but recall the trivial excitement in her voice whenever she explained her adrenaline rush, whenever she was hurt. I know what that rush feels like—I’ve felt it several times. It’s an addictive type of rush, something you only feel whenever your body is in a state of vulnerability. The way she described it to me worried me—because I’m fearing that she’ll want this feeling more and more. I know she doesn’t feel it when she’s riding on a bike—or at least I never have. It’s when you’re driving that your life in is complete control of your fingertips. One wrong move and that could be the end.

Carrie and I showered, helping each other. Once we were finished, I took care of the wounds on her legs and cheeks, disinfecting them, and bandaging them. I feared that this would become a regular thing—but this was a fear I planned on keeping inside of me. I didn’t want to put any ideas into her head—my overthinking could put Carrie into even more trouble if she took the wild thoughts I had buzzing around in my skull into consideration.

Afterward, we crawled into bed. Carrie had wrapped a bandage around my ankle, assuming that something was fractured because of my limp. My mind flashes back to Rad, snagging it with his fingers, and he was determined with bringing me down to the ground with him. The only reason I fell was because… Never mind that, I twisted it the wrong way, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was fractured. Carrie rolls over, small sighs of pain arising as she leans on my chest.

“I’m sorry,” Carrie sighs.

I can feel her breath hitch a few times, signifying that she was crying. Now I silenced her with a kiss, and that’s exactly what I did. My lip was still throbbing in pain, but it didn’t stop me. I wanted to kiss her. I wanted to show her I wasn’t dismayed.

“No. I’m sorry you got dragged into this crap.” I whisper, my lips pressing against Carrie once more before she even answers me back. I was trying to be genuine, but I couldn’t tell if my actions spoke my sincerity. All I could do was hope that she understood.
