C hapter 5

AS THEhours passed, Martel couldn’t help being impressed by how well Felix fit in with all his coworkers. Rather than cling helplessly to Martel’s side, he dove right in and managed to find common ground with just about everyone he talked to. And after his third Honey Weiss, he started milking his fictitious role of “the boyfriend” for all it was worth—holding Martel’s hand, leaning against him, calling him by ridiculous spur-of-the-moment pet names like “whoopie pie” and “blobfish” and “sock puppet.”

Martel spotted Dan sitting in one of the lounge chairs around the perimeter of the cafeteria, so he and Felix headed over to join him.

“Is this the boyfriend?” Dan asked, reaching out to shake Felix’s hand. Martel nodded. “This is Felix. Felix, this is Dan, my boss.”

Felix cracked a surprisingly charming smile. “I’ve heard so many good things about you,” he said, even though Martel knew he’d only mentioned Dan’s name to Felix once or twice in passing. “Martel just loves his job. Thank you for making him so happy here.”

Martel took a seat on the narrow loveseat beside Dan’s armchair, but Felix, instead of sitting next to him, slid into his lap. When Martel shot him a warning glare, Felix laughed and innocently asked, “What’s the matter, puli?”

Martel leaned in close to his ear and whispered, “As soon as you sober up, I’m going to kick your ass.”

“Come on, admit it. You’re having fun with me.” He gave Martel a quick peck on the cheek and then snuggled against his chest.

Felix fit startlingly well in Martel’s lap. A little too well, in fact. Martel felt an unexpected surge in his blood flow— not something he wanted to deal with while his relatively sober boss sat only a few feet away. He shot to his feet, toppling Felix onto the adjacent cushion. “I’m going to stop by the cafeteria and grab some food. Felix, you want something to eat?”

“Something sweet, please,” Felix replied. The appetizers were set out buffet style, and being well into the evening, various entrees had also magically appeared on the tables. But Martel was still fairly anxious, and he didn’t think he could stomach a heavy meal. Instead, he tossed a few vegetables and some dip onto his paper plate. While he was checking out the desserts for Felix, he suddenly felt someone’s presence behind him—an overbearing presence that stood much too close for comfort. “Hi, Phil,” he said without turning around.

Phil stepped up next to him and smiled. “Where’s your boyfriend?”

“Talking with Dan. I’m picking up some food for him.” “I have to tell you, sweetie, Felix is nothing like what I pictured for you.”

Martel frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Phil shrugged defensively. “I thought you’d show up here with someone more glamorous. Someone like Valentín. Tall, exotic, muscular—you know the type.”

“Felix and I have been friends for years,” Martel said.

“You don’t think he’s a little…?” Phil made a careless gesture with his hands, as if that was supposed to clear everything up.
