CHAPTER 12

Nicu had awoken to heartbreaking screams and sobs, Lucius’ aura and presence immediately recognizable even before he knew what was happening. He was shocked to see the depth of Lucius’ slumber; his body writhing and squirming on the seat of the chair, eyes locked shut to the daylight. Nicu shuffled off the bed, muscles still weak and burning, arms immediately reaching for Lucius only to be slapped away. He took a step back but was grabbed roughly, his mate’s fingers digging into his arms.

Lucius continued to babble, the words from his mouth nonsensical but so raw and emotional they struck a chord deep in Nicu’s heart. When he finally managed to lure Lucius away from the darkness, the sadness in his blue eyes revealed so much pain and heartbreak. Nicu wanted to take it away, let it sink into his own body along with the guilt that already festered there.

After he’d settled Lucius, Nicu crawled in the bed beside him. He felt a flash of selfishness for the appreciation coursing through him when he pulled Lucius into his arms. But once he pressed his naked torso flush against Lucius’ trembling one, all thoughts left his head. He wouldn’t allow guilt to dirty the perfection of the moment.

It was also wrong to feel such contentment when he knew Lucius was suffering, and most especially when he now knew the dire situation causing the torment. He’d suspected there was more to Lucius’ reactions to him, things contributing to his gray aura. Nicu could have used their newly-formed connection to delve deeper into Lucius’ upset—it was one of the things his grandmother had educated him on—but it was against the laws of the legend to seek such knowledge on his own. But if Nicu loved Lucius, truly believed they were spirit mates in every sense of the word, was it not his responsibility to always protect him from harm, at least as long as he were around to do so?

Fortunately for Nicu, he was strong enough, or perhaps selfish enough, to not allow the guilt to ruminate for long, at least not for the present. He needed this interlude with Lucius, needed to hold and comfort him for as long as Lucius would allow it. Time was running out and he couldn’t pass up a few precious moments of what he’d waited for his entire life. He didn’t want to stop the amazing surge of emotion that flowed through him from merely holding Lucius in his arms, the feeling of having his dragostea trust him enough to seek his comfort.

It was the stillest state Nicu had ever seen Lucius: not quite peaceful, but at least partially at peace and rest. Nicu remembered no greater feeling in his life than what he felt in that moment, Lucius relaxed and pushing back into his arms, the shivers in Lucius’ body dwindling down and then disappearing.

All Nicu had ever wanted was to experience the need and love that currently radiated from Lucius’ body; their hearts beating as one, fates aligned and destiny tingling at their fingertips.
