I sit with my mother’s letter in my hand and breathe deeply. I calm down a little. Eventually. I take a deep breath and put it back in the envelope with care. I put my flowery night box away. I want to take my mom’s advice, I really do. But my mom lived in simpler times. She never dealt with Kelli, the cheerleader from hell. I head back downstairs to apologize to my dad for running out of the room.

EIGHTEEN

SOMETIMES BESTIES JUST KNOW

I walk past Lewis’s room. I swallow hard and wipe another tear away as I duck my head inside. “Hey.”

He looks over at me. “Yeah.” His voice is soft.

“I kissed Devyn,” I whisper so my dad can’t hear in case he’s nearby.

His eyes get big. “You did? How?”

I look down. I can’t meet his eyes. “I did what you said. I dragged him out on the grass under the moonlight.”

He grins and shakes his head. “I can’t believe you did that.”

I nod my head. “Well, I did.” I take a deep breath. “I also slapped Kelli across the face.”

Lewis’s eyes get big. “Whoa. That’s so badass.”

I stare at the floor some more. “Thanks.”

“Handprint?” His voice is all hopeful.

I grin up at him. “Yep.”

“Dude. That’s so boss.”

My dad stomps past me in the hallway. “What’re you two going on about?”

Lewis pulls his famous clueless face of innocence. “Nothin’, Dad.”

Dad squeezes my shoulder. “Meridian. Come back to the table. We’re not done talking.”

I follow him downstairs to the kitchen and sit down. “Do you want me to call her parents?”

Terror fills me. “No, Dad. Please don’t do that. That’ll just make it worse.”

His face is full of doubt. “Worse than it is now?”

I nod my head. “Yes. No one likes a snitch.”

He takes my hand. “Meridian. No one has the right to get you drunk and take pictures like they did.”

“Yeah, but I drank the drink, Dad.”

“I’m your father, Meridian.” He slaps the table and continues like he doesn’t hear me. “It’s my job to keep you safe.”

“Dad.” I take a deep breath. “Jessie’s dad’s a cop and Ariel’s dad is a well-known attorney. Do you really think it would do any good to go against them?” I frown. “Besides, the pictures they took don’t show my face. They’re from the neck down.” I look at him. “They knew exactly what they were doing.”

Frustration is written all over my dad’s face. “What about the drink? We could at least go get blood lab taken to in case you were drugged.”

I shake my head. “No. It’d just be their word against mine. I took the open can from her. I willingly drank from it.” I focus on breathing. “Lewis warned me. He told me not to drink anything I didn’t pour myself.” Tears roll down my cheeks and I wipe them away, but more come. I’m like a fountain of regret. “I knew, Dad. I knew it, but I didn’t want to know it. I didn’t want to believe they would be so mean.
