Chapter 60

Maggie

“It was almost noon before Lizzie returned with the doctor. “Let me see how you are doing Maggie,” Dr. Thompson said carefully checking to make sure everything was all right.

Maggie tried hard to lay still but it was impossible the pains were too strong. Finally sitting down on the chair beside her bed he told her that the baby was ready to come and it was up to him to help her.

“How do you know my baby is a girl?” Maggie asked through her tears. “I don’t know for sure but I do know this little person is very stubborn and that may mean it is a girl like her mother.” He said with a loving smile.

“Now I will need lots of hot water and this knife boiled,” he said to Lizzie handing her a knife from his doctor’s bag. “Your baby will die if it is not born soon so I have to cut your stomach and get the baby out. I will give you something for the pains and before too long you will have your baby in your arms.”

The medicine that the doctor gave Maggie was helping a little but he knew she would need more before he actually began to cut. “Here Helen,” give this to Maggie,” he said handing her the bottle. “Give her two more tablespoons full, and then we will wait a few minutes. Holding Maggie’s hand he tried to sooth her fears. He knew she was scared and he too was concerned for the baby was coming too early. Finally after Maggie’s eyes closed and her breathing became a little more relaxed the doctor took the knife in his hand telling Lizzie to stand close so he could hand her the baby.

Lizzie and her mother both watched with tears in their eyes as the doctor made the incision. Suddenly Maggie started to squirm. “It is going to be alright, everything is going to be alright,” her Mother said holding her hand. “Yes it is going to be alright, every baby is different,” the doctor said, “just a few more minutes Maggie and your baby will be here.” It wasn’t more than 5 minutes before the doctor pulled the baby from Maggie’s stomach and plopped it into the sheet in Lizzie’s arms. “Oh my baby is here,” Maggie, cried, “my baby is here. Is everything alright, is my baby alright?” “Your baby looks fine,” the doctor said with a big smile, she is very small but she looks fine. I am going to sew up your stomach now Maggie,” he continued, motioning for her mother to give her more medicine. “Just relax and let me finish.” For just a few minutes Maggie drifted in and out of a fitful consciousness. Then finally opening her eyes again she saw her mother sitting in the chair by her bed with the baby in her arms. Reaching out Maggie wanted to take the baby but her stomach hurt so badly and she was so weak.
