The ride back to Greenhills took Cori and Luke by the cottage. His defensive armor had come up after the rest stop and Cori couldn’t penetrate it as hard as she tried. He was cordial and appeared interested in her stories about the property, but the businessman was back.

“Let’s walk the horses the rest of the way.” She wanted to get through to the other Luke one more time. She could no more turn her back on him than she could’ve ignored a wounded animal.

Luke drew in the reins and dismounted. “I enjoyed the ride.”

They started down the path to the river as if both had the same thought.

Cori looked over at him. “And will this day be a good memory?”

“Yes.” He shook his head as if he didn’t quite like the outcome.

They stopped and watered the horses before Cori ground-tied them near some clumps of grass and they began to graze.

“That’s all I wanted, you know.” She took off her hat and wiped her brow with her forearm.

“Why?” He shook his head. “I don’t understand you.”

She smoothed back her hair and stepped over to him. He started to speak, but she placed her finger on his lips. Whatever he’d been about to say died with her touch. She removed his hat and threw it on the ground.

Cori stood on her toes, put her hands on Luke’s shoulders, and kissed him. His lips were tightly closed and she teased them, flicking her tongue along the corners of his mouth, nibbling his lower lip, asking for more.

His hands closed around her waist and he pushed her back, stared at her, his eyes flashing a warning. She locked his look with her own, stepped toward him, dared him with her own message. Feel, touch, kiss me.

Time stopped for an instant.

Luke muttered, “Infuriating woman,” and crushed her to him, his mouth taking hers in a storm of fire and rage.

And she took his anger and answered it with heat and passion. She put her arms around his neck and stepped into the tempest, fitting her body to his, offering her tenderness and warmth as solace to his inflexibility and iciness.

His punishing kiss softened and she felt the change. His invading tongue gentled and hers sparred playfully with him, darting in and out of his mouth. His body warmed and he enveloped her in his arms.

Their bodies entwined as they discovered each other. Cori took Luke into her care and gave him her trust. The kiss ended and she caressed his cheek. She felt his body shudder against her as if holding back some great emotion.

She looked up at him. “Do you still think this is because of the sun?”

He caught his breath. “We can’t do this.” He rested his forehead against hers.

She laughed. “That’s what we call closing the barn door after the horse gets out.”

“You know nothing about me.” His eyes were haunted.

She put her hand on his chest over his heart. “I know this.” She guided his hand to her heart. “And this.
