“Hold on.” Stacey laid the last of the yoga mats from that evening’s five-thirty class on the balcony rail to dry. “I can’t get my head around why you’d even consider going to the party. You like sweetpants, don’t you? Even though she’s not available.”

Alice smiled at Stacey’s nickname for Julia. “I’m attracted to her, but it could never go anywhere. She’s in a relationship with Scott West for a start. I’m not going to have an affair with anyone. That’s not me.”

“Good girl,” Stacey said. “But why go then? Baseball’s not exactly your thing, and I doubt there will be any single girls there for you.”

“I’m curious. Julia seems like she is an honest person, yet this whole Scott situation confuses me. Why would her mother try and set her up with me when she’s in a long-term relationship? It doesn’t make any sense.”

“You could always ask her,” Stacey said. “She often comes to the seven-thirty class.” She glanced at her watch. “Speaking of which, we’d better get back inside. They’ll start arriving at any moment.”

Alice followed Stacey inside the studio and stopped when Stacey turned to her, eyebrows raised. Rose was already in the reception area filling her bottle from the water cooler. She was the first to arrive.

“Hello, ladies.” Rose smiled warmly at the two women. “I hope I’m not the only one tonight.” She laughed. “I’m not sure my old bones could handle adjustments in every pose.”

“They’ll all rush in three minutes before I close the door,” Stacey said. “You watch.”

“Rose,” Alice said, “could I ask you something?”

Rose nodded and followed Alice over to a quiet corner.

“I wondered why you commented the other week about wanting to introduce Julia to me. It sounded like you were trying to set us up.”

Rose grinned. “I was. I still can’t believe what she wore to that class. I am sorry, she’s usually much more glamorous.”

“I’m confused,” Alice said. “Julia’s in a relationship with Scott West. Has been for years. Why would you try and set her up if that’s the case?”

Rose rolled her eyes. “They’ve been best friends since childhood. Would do anything for each other including protecting each other’s careers. It’s a relationship of convenience and one I’ve tried to talk them both out of for many years. They’re denying themselves the opportunity of love, and I think they’re both crazy. Now I’m taking matters into my own hands.”

Relief flooded through Alice. Julia wasn’t a liar after all. Well technically she was, but not in the way that mattered to Alice. She understood the not coming out and protecting her career bit, could even forgive that, but she couldn’t look past Julia cheating on Scott. “They’re just friends,” she confirmed. “And Scott knows she’s a lesbian?”

Rose nodded.

The reception area was filling with students, and Rose started to walk toward the yoga room. She patted Alice on the arm. “I think you would be perfect for Julia.” She winked, and with her mat under one arm pushed into the hot room.
