Chapter Sixteen

Tom called Mike's office Monday and arranged to stop by and talk to Jonny that afternoon, arriving at Mike's office just as Mike and Jonny were about to shut things down for the day. Mike had told them that Jonny was a computer geek extraordinaire, and he proved to be as knowledgeable about professional recording equipment and techniques as he was computers. Tom ordered some fairly expensive equipment based upon Jonny's recommendations and engaged Jonny's services to show him, as well as Noah, how to use it to best effect in the church.

The month of March went by in a hurry. Tom and Noah had three major services between Palm Sunday and Easter and extra rehearsals for the April performance of the Mass in B Minor along with numerous musical items associated with school. Rehearsals with the JSO Chorus were just one more thing on their calendar.

They spent three Saturday mornings with Jonny and the new recording equipment, one each at Good Shepherd and two other churches. After the third Saturday, Jonny pronounced the two of them fit to set up the equipment and microphones in any venue—with or without any outside help. Jonny also agreed to record their upcoming musical performances as part of the deal.

Tom drove himself and, to a lesser extent, Noah relentlessly. At times he found himself wondering why they were still speaking to each other. Not that they were quarreling, but the tension of meeting each successive performance date was taking its toll. They were, in fact, too exhausted to quarrel—they crawled into their bed every night too tired to do much more than cuddle for a while before sleep captured them.

Finally, the Easter Sunday services—there had been two full services—were behind them, and they went home and crawled into bed without even bothering with lunch. They lay in bed for a long time, enjoying the luxury of not having to be anywhere or do anything.

"It's been a rough three weeks, hasn't it?” Tom said.

"Was that a comment or a complaint?"

"More or less. Have I told you how much I love you?"

"Not for at least twenty-four hours, but I like hearing it."

"I'm sorry that I've driven us both so hard."

"I don't think you drove me any harder than I drove myself,” Noah said.

"Okay,” he said, “I surrender. We're both pretty much the driven-to-achieve-perfection types."

"Yeah, that we are."

They drifted off to sleep only to be awakened by hunger some time later. “What time is it?” Noah said, his stomach rumbling.

"Nearly three, and we need to eat."

"Yeah, that's for sure."

They took a quick shower, dressed, and went to The Loop for a soup and salad combination.

Their pace the following week was somewhat less frenetic, and they actually found the time and energy to enjoy each other's bodies more often than they'd been doing during the previous month. Saturday morning, they decided to go to Five Points and have breakfast at the Derby House. They found George and Mike sitting at a table with another couple—a redhead and a brunet—and the minute George spotted them, he waved them over.
