Erica almost squealed in delight. She read the passage out loud to Rachel, trying to hide any sign of self-righteous pleasure. Rachel listened with a sombre expression on her face.

“See, you can’t judge me, Rachel,” Erica announced when she’d finished. “Paul makes no distinction between the Christians he’s writing to and the homosexuals he’s talking about earlier. They’re all as bad as each other.”

Rachel didn’t respond but sat looking sullenly thoughtful.

“Look, Rachel, I’m not trying to point the finger or anything. I’m just saying nobody’s perfect. Not me, not you, nobody. Everyone does stuff they wish they hadn’t. Even you!”

Rachel appeared stung by Erica’s words, but the glimpse of her inner pain was fleeting. “I’m sorry you felt judged,” Rachel whispered.

Erica was a little thrown, she had expected more resistance. “Umm, thanks,” she said awkwardly, after a long pause. “I appreciate the apology.”

“I’m just worried about you. Of course, I know I’m guilty of sin too.” Rachel lowered her head and looked at the floor as she said this, with genuine sincerity.

“Don’t worry about it,” Erica consoled, all the smugness from moments ago evaporating in the light of Rachel’s surprising about-turn. “That’s why Jesus died on the cross, isn’t it? We’re forgiven.”

“Sure.”

“I don’t want to argue anymore. What do you say we forget all this and be friends again?”

“You thought we weren’t?” came Rachel’s mock retort, a sarcastic smirk forming in one corner of her mouth.

“Ha ha! Very funny.”
